Even with the spots she has, I think the Goodwinol ointment rather than the dips would help. From what I've read about the dips, they are very toxic. I would only do the dips in an extreme circumstance, and what you've described doesn't sound bad enough to warrant such an agressive approach.

Well, I decided to do the dip. I researched it, called an animal dermatologist, called a breeder, called a couple of other vets, and worried about it. I dropped her off at the vet this morning before work. I plan on doing the dips, and starting her on vitamins to start the process of building her immune system. Last night, I felt so bad for her itchiness & discomfort. She kept on rubbing against the chair in my room to scratch her itches. It made my heart ache for her! That is what brought comfort to me that I am doing the dips. If she gets it again in the future, I will try a different approach, but the dips seem to be the right thing right now, because it is spreading. I'll keep you all posted on how it goes. I hope I did the right thing.

Subi had mange when she was a puppy 4 weeks, hers was scarpotic mange though, after her spay she got it again, she was 5 months old this time it was demodex, because of the 1st time she had mange my dr. did the dip for her. she was dipped 3 times and we havent had a reoccurence yet. it was not pleasant for either her or me, but i felt it was the only thing to do.
you are going to have to wait to spay bentley till the mange is cleared up, but dont be surprised if she gets it again, the spay will weaken her immune system, but if you do the vitamin c & e you will probably be okay. also my rescue does Herbal Mineral Trace, to cure mange dogs and it works, i give it to subi everyday and we havent had mange come back :) if you can not find it i can give you a link, i just found a link to it :)

Good luck and keep us posted :)

Sube Ru's Mom- Thank you! If you could give me that link, that would be great! I appreciate it! What do you give her besides that, if anything? How much/often? Also, what do you feed her? Thanks so much!

Good luck Bay - I hope the dip clears it up! It sounds a though you made a good decision. My Boxer has localized mange, but the weird thing is that I *never* see her itching herself and it does not seem to be spreading.

If Bentley is itching like crazy, that seems like a sign that it is trying to become generalized, so hopefully you are nipping it in the bud.

Good luck!

With that many spots, I think you made the right decision. Can you just picture him in the bathtub at the vet's? :D I don't know what he's like for baths, but Abby has the most sorrowful look on her face, she's TOTALLY just playing it up and trying to get me to give her more treats! I'm sure he'll be just fine.

Thank you all for your support!

sbartels- Bentley loves her showers. I put her in the shower with me, and she is perfect! My roomates think it is hilarious when they learn that we take showers together. I think it's the easiest way!

Sube Ru'sMom- I will be trying what u suggested. Thank you!

If she loves showers, then don't worry a bit about the dips. It's just a long bath and soak, really. I'm sure they'll give her tons of lovin' and kissin' and she'll think she's at the spa for the day. appicon

Subi ru's mom~

I have a rescue who's got kidney failure (maybe improved to insufficiency by now!)...is it safe to give the vitamin's your rescue uses to her? what about vit c and e...can she get those safely as well??
She doesn't have any spots but is always itching her jowels and chin...can these things be used as a preventative in any dog?
Thanks for the info!!
