Darn RAWHIDES! Help please??

My sis just called, her boxer pup, he's about 8months.. swallowed a big knot of rawhide..
I do not give mine rawhide. I don't know what to tell her, other than to watch him closely.. And all I can think is to tell her to watch him for blockage.... What else should I tell her to watch for? I'm concerned because they swell, and if he throws it up, could it choke him on the way up!???
Any input would help.. She's just beside herself.. She also feeds raw, but gave rawhide and now is very upset that she did...

It really wouldn't help to take him to the vet now, because he seems ok, I'm guessing she is just going to have to keep a close eye on him??
Again.. any input would be appreciated..

Keep a close eye on him and give a call to the vet to get their take on the situation and also to make them aware of what happened and that they may be seeing him for it. If he acts anything but normal, I would get him to the vet ASAP.

Thank you! I'll call her and tell her that.. So far he is doing ok, but she's going to watch him closely.. She said she will never again give a rawhide, even if she is watching them.. because it happened sooo fast.. She didn't figure he could swallow such a big knot.. and when she went to get it, he gulped the whole thing!

How terrible!!

I stopped giving mine rawhides after a similar scare several months ago. Luckily my boy was fine. Now I only give them basted bull knuckles or similar chewy's (these are much to large to be swallowed, & to hard to be chewed into pieces).

I hope everything works out.

Basted bull knuckles (and ANY cooked bone) can splinter and be just as dangerous (if not more so) than a rawhide. In the meat dept of the grocery there are "soup bones". Just hand that to the pup raw....it is MUCH better for them. Be careful of cooked bones....

Sounds like the typical boxer!.. Thanks again to those of you that posted... and to all of boxer world, there's always such a wealth of information when one does a search.. Still helps when others answer a post, because sometimes it's hard to find exactly what I'm looking for.

Do remind her that it might be a few days before problems start. Conner had an obstruction that didn't get "stuck" until it was nearly out the other end. It was a few days before he started having noticeable problems. Any signs of lethargy should be taken seriously.

Make sure she keeps a close eye!

Raw-hides don't digest properly! They can swell in their stomachs and cause bowel blockages or bloat! So if they get too soggy and "swallowable", take them away. Also, some raw-hides that are manufactured outside of the U.S. contain formaldehyde! make sure to watch the labels when feeding a raw-hide! Hope all turns out well! Keep us posted!

Hi Karen, I'm so sorry to hear about your sister's baby boy! (I always cringe when I hear the word rawhide, it causes so many problems.) I hope he is OK. As others have posted, problems can still show up, so he should be watched closely. Sending lots of good thoughts for the little boy, and your sister, too. Please keep us posted.

P.S. I wish they would take every rawhide chew off the market.....those and greenies!!!! :(
