Hello everyone. Sasha was diagnosed with Cushings and has a very severe case od Calcinosis Cutis which is just horrible for her and us. It is obvious that it hurts her and the open wounds are getting worse even though she started treatment for the cushings. The vet said he really knows of nothing that can help her right now and that the skin will hopefully heal in time but that could be months. I want to do something for her so its not so itchy and painful. we have to keep a t-shirt on her and keep her from trying to itch it. Does anyone have any experience with this or have any suggestions. Thanks for all your help and prayers we really do appreciate it. Mike

I'm so sorry to hear about Sasha's Cushing's and her painful skin condition. I don't have any experience, but am sending lots of healing and hopeful thoughts, and hugs for your dear girl. Has your vet prescribed or suggested some topical spray, cream or ointment to relieve her discomfort and prevent infection? I know how sad it is to see your baby in pain and so uncomfortable. Please keep us posted on how she's doing.

My boy Dexter has Cushing's. He doesn't have the same skin ailments at Sasha, however he did have a staph infection on his belly and inner thighs which the vet said is a Cushing side effect. The vet gave us an antibiotic for the staph which I know wouldn't help Sasha, BUT he did tell us to get 100% white cotton muslin sheets, wash them in non-allergenic laundry soap, NO dryer sheet and put them on his dog bed. I couldn't find these sheets anywhere. So I ended up getting 100% cotton white sheets washed and dried as instructed and put them on his dog bed. I did find 100% white cotton muslin in the fabric dept at Walmart. But I've been using the sheets I found. The lady at Walmart said the sheets we bought were almost exactly the same as what the muslin would be once washed. I hope this helps Sasha feel more comfortable. How is she doing?

sasha update

The skin issue has gotten worse and is infected. The vet started her on antibiotics. She has been on the Lysodren for six days now in the loading stage, hoping to see her respond to the meds soon. Her skin condition will hopefully get better once her cushings is under control. For now it is miserable for her and us, thanks for all the thoughts and prayers we appreciate it. Mike

So sorry to hear of your troubles. Poor girl sounds very uncomfortable. Are there any nutritional or holistic avenues open to you? Just a thought. Sometimes a nutritional consult can uncover things that might help a pup heal and bolster the effects of the treatment. So sorry she is suffering and we send gentle boxer wiggles and good thoughts to your sweet Sasha

Hope this helps and she is getting better. I did read an article that stated once the Cushing's treatment is on maintenance, loading done, the calcinosis cutis does get worse before it gets better. Hopefully since Sasha's has gotten worse and she is on antibiotics, it will get better soon.

I wish there were something I knew of to help.

The most common symptoms include:
• increased/excessive water consumption (polydipsia)
• increased/excessive urination (polyuria)
• urinary accidents in previously housetrained dogs
• increased/excessive appetite (polyphagia)
• appearance of food stealing/guarding, begging, trash dumping, etc.
• sagging, bloated, pot-bellied appearance
• weight gain or its appearance, due to fat redistribution
• loss of muscle mass, giving the appearance of weight loss
• bony, skull-like appearance of head
• exercise intolerance, lethargy, general or hind-leg weakness
• new reluctance to jump on furniture or people
• excess panting, seeking cool surfaces to rest on
• symmetrically thinning hair or baldness (alopecia) on torso
• other coat changes like dullness, dryness
• slow regrowth of hair after clipping
• thin, wrinkled, fragile, and/or darkly pigmented skin
• easily damaged/bruised skin that heals slowly
• hard, calcified lumps in the skin (calcinosis cutis)
• susceptibility to infections (especially skin and urinary)
• diabetes, pancreatitis, seizures
