Poor Billy - today he had crutiate surgery on his right rear knee. Now this knee was operated on back in November 1999 so the surgery has lasted just under 3 years.

He had surgery to his left knee in May 2001, but that was the then new TPLO procedure - I just hope that lasts longer.

Billy had been limping on and off on his right leg recently and then we found he wasn't using it at all. So he had a course of painkillers and anti-inflamatories which helped a bit but once the course finished he was limping again.

So we went back to the specialist who operated originally and he said the best thing would be for him to open up the joint and see what he could do. Billy is only 5.5 yrs and so we didn't want him to live the rest of his life on painkillers etc.

Anyway, I rang the vet this afternoon and they said they were able to perform TPLO and it all went well. Billy had come round from the anesthetic and I have to ring tomorrow to find out when to pick him up.

Poor Billy - we feel really bad that he has had to have another op, but there you go!

So a word of advice to anyone whose dog has to have this surgery. If the vet offers TPLO or the old method which is cheaper - go for the TPLO.

Will keep you posted on his recovery!

Helen: I am sending special healing vibes to Billy~~~~~ Sorry to hear he was hurting so much. I agree, I would not want my boxer on painkillers all the time. Glad the surgery went well and hope all is fine and Billy never has the knee problem ever again. ;) Ginger sends Billy a big sloppy kiss.:p

Better an operation followed by a recovery period than constant, nagging pain. Definitely the right choice, esp. for a dog still in his prime!

Hugs to you for being such a wonderful mum and healing vibes and slobbery boxer kisses (courtesy of Buster) to Billy! lovicon

Poor Billy :( I hope this surgery will be very successful and hopefully his last one. I think you did the right thing by having it fixed again. He still has many years ahead of him and this will make him alot more comfortable in the long run!

Speedy recovery to you Billy!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Take care, get some rest, and make sure you take advantage of getting x-tra spoiled while you recover!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm sorry for sounding dumb, but what is TPLO?

I'm not very familiar with medical terminology, but our Nikki had knee surgery a couple of years ago for a torn knee ligament. Hubby says she now has a titanium wire in her knee. I'm still kinda confused about the whole procedure.

We are thinking of Billy and we're sure he'll have a very fast recovery. Keep us updated on him!!

THANKS FOR ALL YOUR GOOD WISHES

I collected Billy yesterday and he's hopping along very well.

He now has a new big long scar next to the old one! The surgeon was able to do TPLO and so hopefully this will be the last of the knee surgery for Billy.

I have to move his leg up and down several times a day and then walk him just a short way several times a day too.

He seems quite happy but his Rottie brother Tommy, keeps washing Billy all the time, and several times Billy has growled at him. So Billy has his bed in the dining room and if we're out he is shut in there and can get some peace and quiet from Tommy.

Tommy was so pleased to see Billy yesterday. He washed Billy's face and tummy and feet, in fact all over!

Will keep you all updated
