Cropped Ears

It's probably because they will not do it under any circumstances in this country, that i believe its cruel........ My view is you most people wouldn't let there school kid go get a nose job, or any other cosmetic surgery so why put your dog through it when they can't say what they want!!!! Thats just my oppinion though.

Also on the pain thing... how do you know they are not in pain???? could it not just be a case of, boxers are good at hiding their pain????

Boxers aren't the only dogs cropped...from what I understand, the behavior shown is much the same no matter what the breed.

We have decided to crop Hannah's ears...Well it was a family decision and well I lost! I have found a local vet that does it and I have seen about 20 that he has done and they are beautiful! He also has a book of different crops he has done, I'm taking Hannah to him next week and he is going to look at her ears and then show me which crop he thinks will be the best for her. I'm not sure what other vet's charge to crop but the one I have decided to us said it will be between 275 and 350....he sends them home with pain meds and antibiotics, the space alien collar( kids name for it ) and also the tape. He also wants me to bring her in every other day after the operation so he can check her.

I'm a little curious as to what "pain meds" he's going to prescribe. The vet I uses, and other vets I know of who crop, do not send home pain medication because there is little need for it if done right. Antibiotics, maybe. I'd be a little cautious of a vet who feels they are necessary. JMO

I'm not sure what type of pain meds he sends home...I have breifly spoke whith him on the phone and he said that he sends a few pills home and he also so said that very very few have ever given them to their babies, he sends them for just incase. I will find out more when I see him next week.

He is one of 3 vets local here...one will not crop at all the other will only do what is called a pit crop and from the ones I have seen him do they are not done very well at all....The one I'm taking Hannah to has done many many crops and he is a very respected vet here....In fact I'm switching all my animals over to him. I will find out what pain meds he sends home and I will post it here. I also would like to thank you for your post this is my first boxer and I respect all the information I can get from others!

It was very helpful to read everyones opinion on cropping because I am deciding whether to do it or not. I definately like the look better, especially on males, (I don't mind if my female looks 'cute'), but I like the males to look somewhat intimidating. On the other hand, I don't want him to experience any unnecessary pain or discomfort, especially at such a young and innocent age. Please let me know how your puppy's cropping goes and if you think he was very uncomfortable or in pain.

When you go for the aftercare, make sure that the vet does not sedate the puppy to tape his ears. I was shocked to learn here that this appears to be common (or at least not rare) procedure for vets doing followup taping care.

Taping is something the vet can teach you in a half hour. If all the aftercare is included in the cropping fee, and the vet doesn't sedate for taping, fine.

If you're getting charged for taping AND the vet wants to sedate the pup, go elsewhere.

I'm not trying to force your decision. It's a tough choice to make. However, keep in mind that you have only a short window in which to make this decision. Once the cartilage begins to form in the ear, it's pretty much too late. Cartilage normally begins to form at 10-11 weeks. Some vets won't crop after this point.

As for pain and discomfort, this is a subject of great debate. There is some discomfort, but most of us who do crop will attest that your pup will be up and playing, showing no signs of pain, by the time they get home. When you are cleaning them, or they bump them when playing too rough will be the only time you may hear a squeal. My boy, who is about as whimpy as they come, never knew what happened.

Cropping is certainly not for everyone. There is a lot of aftercare, which could go on for months. It's all to easy to get frustrated and give up. So, keep in mind what you are in for. A lot of protecting, cleaning, taping and taping and taping.....and more taping.
