croping the ears?

ok i have another question, i know that if you crop or not its all preference all far as i have read but i was wondering how long they stand up? i have never had a dog with croped eats before but do they ever fall or start to sag? and natural ears would help keep them clean being i leave right next to the beach right?

Good morning Joe I would think cropping the ears would be more for show, but your right it is a preference, keeping them natural will keep cleaner. I perfer them natural myself

Depends where you live LOL - here in the UK, cropping has been illegal for longer than the boxer breed has existed - so there's never been cropped boxers over here. It is illegal in many other countries as well. I don't know of any US States that have outlawed it yet though, so I guess you do indeed have the choice.

My understanding is that there is a great deal of aftercare involved though, and getting the ears to stand can involve up to a year of taping (but not necessarily in all cases). Yes, I would think that natural ears in a sandy environment would be better.

Cropping probably wouldn't help in a sandy environment, but having them cropped can help keep them from getting infections because of the air being able to circulate in the ear and dry the ear out. Otherwise cropping can be a lot of work, or take only a month. Some dogs only need a posting or two and others need to be taped for up to a year. It depends on the ear cartilage. Once the ears stand they stay up because the ear muscles have built up enough to make them stand.

Cropping is a lot of work. I just got my female last week at 8.5 months old from her breeder. She was going to be shown which is why her ears were cropped. Anyway, she had them cropped around 12 weeks of age and just now finished with the taping at 8.5 months old! Most people crop for show purposes, though there are a few that do it just for personal preference. It is a lot of work!

yeah i don't think im going to crop ears when i get a pup thats too much to do for something only in apperence and taped ears for a year would be annoying for the dog.

I do believe there are different kinds of crop jobs that you can get done. There is the show cut and the other would be the pet crop. I don't know the tecnical names you would call them. Our boxer came to us with cropped ears and I actually prefer the cropped look. To each his own. I do believe that if you are going to have a pet boxer and get a pet crop which is not as long as the show crop that the ears will stand much sooner and there will not be as much taping involved. Again, I have never had any dog's ears cropped so I really don't know, it's just what I have read from other people here at BW and in articles.

I like both, Max is floppy. I think it is allowed now to show natural ears, any input from others as I may be wrong.

It used to be mandatory to crop the ears for show. It is no longer necessary as they've now changed the rules.

Cropping would seem to be very painful - about 48 stitches in each ear and an endless amount of work - changing bandages, etc. They are not happy puppies - it hurts!

Sometimes the cropping doesn't work: one ear will stand up and the other ear will flop over, or stick out at a weird angle. The operation is expensive to begin with - are you now going to try again?

In Canada, though it's still allowed by law, it is not popular. Many vets will actually refuse to do it.

My first boxer (many years ago) was a "rescue" - ex-show dog that had cropped ears. I thought he was just beautiful - and the ones with upcropped ears "looked funny". All the rescues I've had since then have had uncropped ears - and now the uncropped ears look "just beautiful"; and the ones with cropped ears look so unusual - like "What were the owners thinking? Why would they do this to their pet?" I can't see that cropping the ears serves any useful purpose whatsoever - it's an unnecessary major operation, inflicting pain, creating work, causing trouble if it doesn't turn out properly, and costing mega bucks. It wouldn't bother me in the least if it became illegal.
