I'm sorry but this wil be sort of lengthy. I was concidering to crop my boxers ears, so I talked to my vet, after all he owns a boxer as his prefered pet of choice(hint 1: find a vet that owns your breed, thier experience is very important to your decisions and wellbeing of your be loved boxer). He told me he didn't like cropping ears and saw no reason to do so, but if it was my wish he would preform the "surgery". He also compared it to having a limb removed from your body. I went home to ponder the decision. My mother was in Shepards Spinal Clinic, due to a car wreck. As I was visiting I noticed alot of people who had lost limbs, so I took the opertunity to research for myself. I was told that in most cases having the limb surgicly removed was not painful, but more uncomfortable, how ever the meds helped reduce the discomfort and rehab got them going again.
I went back to the vet and asked about a pain reliever for dogs, he assured me he would find something to help. After time had passed I was unable to have Justice's ears done due to being busy with mom during her time of need. however I will be croping my next boxer puppy's ears, if it is still leagal in the USA.
I know what you are thinking how could you? Causing pain to your pet! Well it's like this, MY DOG, MY CHOICE!! The pain is temporary and is alot less painful than having the ear lost in an accident. I use my boxers for work to tote things and companionship, they love being out and about, so do I. Plus if something happened to them while working I would not be able to forgive myself. Unblocked ear cannals equal better hearing,and safer working conditions for them. Now why anyone whos boxer is just a house pet need not be cropped but for the owners pleasure, reconsider this choice. Show dogs may also reconsider now days, however I think it will be long time coming to see it popular in the states. Maybe this helps others, maybe not. Croping should be done young, by an expierienced vet, and for a purpose. Please make an educated decision, not just for looks. All boxers are not created equal, some have longer snouts and look hidious croped, although some are beautiful either way. After all who wants thier kids having pierce ears cause it looks good on the neighbors kid?
