Crates - thoughts

Right, you are supposed to ignore him. Saying "no" is giving him attention. You are acknowledging that he's barking/crying. Even if it's not good attention, to a dog attention is attention in no matter what form it comes.
I only take Tyson out of the crate if he's calm. I put him in there sometimes when I get home and of course he throws a fit, but he's slowly learning if he quiets down, mom takes him out.
I, like Lael, also feed him in his crate. I also scatter some of his food in there for him to find, so when he's hungry and his bowl is empty, he often wanders into the crate to find his snacks.

This is exactly what our Basic Training instructor told us as well. Even if your dog knows what "no" means (and honestly, at 8 weeks old, I doubt your puppy understands "no"), it still considers it good that it got your attention. I think there are also some other threads on saying "no" too much.

LOL..no he doesn't know what no mean. I am trying to teach him NOT to eat the cat food, he just loves it. He does respond to the loud clapping sound, he just looks at me like "what, I am not doing anything wrong". :rolleyes:

At night when he gets up and needs to go outside, I won't open the crate until he stops whining. And it would be so much easier to just put him bed with us, but I don't want to start that. I think I would break our dalmations heart because he's not aloud on the bed either. Well, at least not when dad is home... No, he very rarely gets up on our bed, he's a bed hog.

I am really looking forward to when Koda is housebroke and won't have to stay in the crate all night, he can sleep on the floor by the bed if he wants. Time, I just keep telling myself time, it's only been a week.

He had a blast this weekend, my friend brought over their Palmeranian (spelling?) and those two just played and played and played.

We had a great night last night, Koda slept from 10:00pm till 4:45am. appicon

He started whining a little bit about 2:00 which is when he normally gets up to go outside, but when I opened the crate he just layed back down and went back to sleep.

When he got up at 4:45 and we went outside and came back in, boy he didn't want to be back in his crate. I didn't think he would ever stop whining and barking but after about 30 minutes he finally stopped. But hey I'll take that if he's willing to sleep that long.

Keep your fingers crossed this will become the norm, well the sleeping till 4:00 anyway...

I just found and read this thread and I just have to ask if there's any update on that beautiful, cute Koda? Reminds me of Penny who's almost 1 y.o.

Hello......

Ohhhhh Koda is doing great with his crate and house training and everything else. He doesn't whine or bark in his crate, he only whines when he needs to go out in the middle of the night. I tried crating him during the day out in our living room instead of in the bedroom and it seemed to make a world of difference.

He is doing great with house breaking, he goes to the back door now for the most part. he's only had a couple of accidents over the last few weeks. It's GREAT!!!!!...

he started puppy class a couple of week ago. tonight was his second class. He is doing great with sitting and staying. We started the down command tonight and he doesn't like that one at all. so we've got to really work on that one...

He is growing so fast, I can't believe it. He had his shots last week and he was already at 26 pounds. But I can't imagen not having him. He is such a cuddle bug.
