I guess i have just been lucky. I have been using a large crate since i got my pup a week ago and hes doing great with messing in it. Hope he keeps this up. I put a blanket over it at nap times and night which helps a lot cuz i think it makes him feel more confined. HIs little safe haven from the neice and nephew and cats and dogs

So we went out crate shopping this morning.....there are so many to choose from.

Does anyone have any suggestions on ones that are better than others. Some are the "deluxe" model and have a chew resistant bottom panel, but the other one doesn't seem much different. Has anyone had any problems with their puppy chewing on the bottom panel?

Herkie never chewed on the bottom panel...however if he thought he was in his crate for too long..instead of whining, he would pry a corner of the panel up and let it slap back down....it made a horrible racket, one you couldn't ignore!I myself like the ones with the slide out tray....it makes it much easier for cleaning...I just slide it out and take it to the shower or outdoors if it's a warm sunny day.And I like it to be collapsable, but his crate is huge...I can sit in it with him. When it's collapsable like that...makes it a lot easier in case you need to move it...if you have a large size crate.Good luck!

I've never had a problem with Lael chewing on the inside of her crate. This is almost exactly what we have, in Large: Deluxe Vari-Kennel
We've had zero problems with this crate. :)

Also... If I haven't already mentioned it, I just wanted to say appicon KUDOS to YOU appicon for preparing so well before you bring home your new puppy. It's good to know this boxer pup will be coming home to a safe & prepared home.

Crating

My SugarRay is crated when we have to go somewhere-not very often -because we do not like to leave him but even after 4 months he still hates it. It is big, clean, soft-padded with a nice rug and towels, kong and he still puts up a huge fuss when we try and get him in it. Is it because he came from a rescue and thinks the crate is a cage and we wont be back? All the while we are gone (never more then 2 or 3 hrs) I am worried and cannot enjoy myself. What am I doing wrong? I love him very much and want him to be safe but I cannot stand to hear him cry when we shut the door and leave. Please give me some suggestions.

Gypszy60,
I am not an expert, but it sounds like it would be beneficial to start back at the beginning with SugarRay. Lael hated her crate as well, and we did several things. We made the crate as cozy and inviting as possible. What are some things that SugarRay just LOVES to death? His bed? Maybe a certain toy? Lael LOVED her bed. So I literally stuffed her entire dog bed in the crate (it filled up about half of it). I'd play with her 'til she was just pooped, then let her fall asleep on my lap. When she was completely out, I'd move her onto her bed in her crate (leave the door open). I'd also play with her with a toy, and gradually move toward the crate, then move into the crate, so that she & I were playing tug in her crate. If she really liked a certain toy, I'd hide it from her for a day or two, then sneak it into her crate & set a little treat in there as well (somewhat visible from the outside so she'd see it without going in). So she'd constantly be finding good toys and yummy treats in her crate. Finally, we started feeding her all of her meals in her crate (yep, on her big fluffy bed ;) ). After several weeks of waking up super comfy in her crate, finding yummy treasures, and eating yummy meals in her crate, she began to go in on her own.

The point is to make sure ALL GOOD THINGS happen in the crate. Go back to not closing the door very often when he's in the crate. And if you do, and he cries, DO NOT open the door until he's quiet. It didn't take too long for Lael to figure out that she only gets out when she's quiet. This can drive you mad, but it's worth it in the long run.

Read the BW puppy crate training article; this will give you the best suggestions. Also, there is so much information on crate training in tons of other forums; try doing a search on crate training.

Good Luck! (Sorry I was so long-winded.)

We just adopted a puppy about a month ago, she was 8wks and we were sure how she was going to adjust and she hadn't really been worked with too much. I had done a lot of research before going into this, and crate training was one of my topics. I am sure you have done your research as well, especially considering your prepared a week in advance. Good for you! SO I won't bore you with specifics. I will just say it has worked incredibly well for us, she was crate trained quickly, and it has helped her housebreaking(which its supposed to do). We do crate her overnight as well, which I saw someone else had asked about. We view it, as well as others, as that's Chloe's "room". That's her safe place that she can go and its for her only. She has some toys in there with her, a crate bed and towel which she loves to have... she gets it all fluffed up the ways she wants it to be so she is comfortable. She has even gotten up some nights, when we're watching TV and walks right into her crate and goes to sleep. I can't believe it. We make sure to get her out when we get home, take her outside, feed her, then back outside for some more play. I guess my biggest concern going in was for the health of the dog, are they getting enough exercise... well thats up to you. I have found it to be a great tool for both us and her. Hope it works just as well for you.

I am so excited, I get to pick up my puppy tonight. Gosh I didn't think this day was ever going to get here.

I am hoping I have everything. I've got the crate, blanket, pillow, bowls, chew toys, kong, bones. We are taking the blanket with us tonight so when we pick him up we can let the other puppies play around on it, then wipe down mom and dad to get their scent on it. I heard this helps them with the transition. They have something familiar then.

I'll pick up the food tonight once I find out what food they have him on.

So can you think of something else I need before tonight?

My oh my......lol

Yay! Congrats! I know just how exciting that is!

I can't think of anything more that you might need right off hand. You'll eventually need grooming supplies too, like nail clippers, styptic gel/powder/pads, rubber curry brush, brush, toothbrush, puppy shampoo etc. You can start ASAP on conditioning your puppy to these things. I have received wonderful service by ordering these things online at JB Pet.com; they're prices are very good and they're Boxer people! ;)

Also, it might be good to get some yummy healthy treats to start your training. :) We started with Lael on day one learning to how to sit. She had it down by the end of our first week with her.

Other than that... have lots of fun!! Give your new baby a hug from us. :)
