I've been reading on Crate training, and it all sounds good and well, but I've got one question. Here is a quote from the FBR website that I found in a past thread...

Introduce your puppy or full-grown Boxer to the crate by initially leaving the crate door open for him to investigate, sniff, and go in and out on his own. We are talking a few days here, if you sense any apprehension on the dog's part.

Well, it says take a couple days for him to get used to the crate...what do you do in the mean time when you are gone? Placing him in the crate seems the only way. Or should I pen him up in the kitchen or bathroom or something? That sure doesnt seem like a good idea...

Crate him......

IMO leaving the crate open aides in him feeling secure, he still HAS to go in, but he also has the option of going in of his own free will any other time. Be consistant, what ever you do!! Frozen Kongs will aid in the process while you have to leave him in there. There will be lots of sad eyes, and whining and crying and barking. But he is safer in the crate (as well as your personal belongings) and it DOES get better with time if you are consistant!!

Good Luck

Its probably a good idea to take some time off work when you get a new puppy or grown dog. Not only to work on crate training but to help them through the transisiton. We we adopted Finnegan earlier this year I took some time off, and between me and my husband he was not alone during the first week with us. I know it may be hard to schedule this depending on your situation, but I would only leave him or her for short periods initially.
