Could they discern a dangerous animal?I know that in the nature the wild animals could, but the domestic pets?

Yesterday during our walk at a hill,i heard a creep in the grasses and i turned and saw Avra standing inflexible...her body "said"DANDGER!!
I went near to her and i said Avra leave it as calmly as i could, then she backed continuing looking at the snake,i anticipated to see only it's tail.
What a relief when i saw the snake goes away!!
I wonder if Avra discerned the danger,i believe so,because at the hill there are many turtles and when Avra found one,she would give a wag of her tail and then would go away

Have your dog ever came face to face with a snake and what did you do at that tense moment?

I wish I could say that I thought Beau would protect me from a dangerous animal. However, I think he would try to befriend it. He is so curious about new things. He does a little investigation dance when he "meets" something new!

Gracie and the raccoon

One night when we got home after dark, there was a raccoon in the front yard. Gracie saw it before I did and was about to run up to it (she looked ready to play). I was really scared that the raccoon was going to hurt her so I yelled for her to leave it and to come. She stopped immediately and ran to me...I was so relieved. I think she responded to the fear in my voice--I don't think that she had any clue that the racoon might be dangerous.

Ok...not so funny on my part...

I am deathly afraid of snakes....to the point of passing out...well Adikus my GSD was running in the soccer field....next thing I know Adikus is running towards me with out the ball in his mouth....but what looked like a wiggley stick...well much to my surprise....yep it was a snake....so off I went running away from my dog screaming at the top of my lungs and Adikus chasing me with the....look what I got mum face....

Needless to say....some nearby walkers came to my rescue....and removed the snake from his mouth. Though there are no rattlesnakes in my area...it could have been worst !!!

I don't think the DANGER word would have worked in this situation...but way to go Avra !!!!

LMAO ahaha Laurie lol. Oh I could just picture Cinnamon doin that to me. Luckily Im not afriad of snakes..just spiders and Cinnamon would probably squish it with her nose.

Im sure they could sense a dangerous animal, they still do have a lot of wild instincts and that is probably one of them.

It's sounds like Avra handled herself perfectly and her instincts told her this was not a friendly turtle. You handled yourself very well also by not panicking and letting the snake get away which is usually what they want to do. I think this says quite a bit about your relationship with Avra and your ability to communicate with each other. Nice job Avra! :)

I am glad Duke has never encountered a snake, I dont know if he would want to play with it, or tear it apart. He likes to play with frogs by chasing them around the yard at night, but has never come across a snake. At least your dog gave you a good warning that thre was danger.

Last May, Joe came nose to nose with a snake on my pool deck. Some of you may remember my frantic post about that episode! :LOL:Thankfully it was a bull snake and not a rattlesnake because Joe was not leaving it alone. They just kept looking at each other. The only way I got Joe to come in was to throw cookies a little bit away from the snake. Then I went up and grabbed his collar and brought him in. I am sure if it was a more aggressive breed of snake, Joe would have been bitten. Snakes, spiders or any other kind of insect/reptile just scares me to death!
