I do feel terrible for poor Zeus and his owners. Hwvr, to be fair, the article doesn't give the police officers side of the story. It's horrible that this dog is dead, but I do wish that the article gave more information.

I find myself wondering if this is an officer out of control or if it truly was a dog out of control and the officer felt he needed to take some sort of action. I doubt if any of us will ever know.

Gotta agree with you. I felt the same way when reading the article. It is a sad, unfortunate situation.

A few questions

1. Why was he jogging with a gun (he's a cop, but still - kinda weird)

2. Where were the dog's owners and why wern't they in control of their dog?

If the dog was growling and coming at him - he had a right to shoot it before it caused harm - that's just how it is :(

This all could have been prevented on the dog owners part :(

Adding to my previous post, I guess the article does state that the Sheriff's investigation suggests that he was not being attacked. It does appear as though the guy made a mistake. My question would be is the guy really just a dog hater or was really fearful for his life? Does he just not know how to read a dogs body language to know if he is charging aggressively or if he is just wanting to play? I would need to know those answers before grabbing my pitchfork.

I don't know the laws, but I'm sure it's legal to shoot a dog if he's attacking you, but still...I feel like it takes an awful lot in a person to shoot a dog in the head.
The guy is a cop, and probably pretty well physically trained and maybe he could have tried to get the dog to back off some other way using his physical strength. I just feel like it takes an awful lot for someone to take out their gun, point it at the dogs head and shoot. Who knows. so sad.

Regardless of the situation my question is still why does he jog with a loaded gun?? What if God forbid he tripped while jogging and the gun went off and killed a child? Godspeed Zeus.. what a heartbreaking story.

That is just so sad. Why was he jogging with his gun off-duty?

Why are they running around with guns, if they're off duty?

My husband is a cop and the reason they carry their guns off duty is because if they live in/ near the community they work in they often run into people (drug dealers, gang members, etc) that they have arrested in the past. Running into these prior “clients” when they have no back up is a serious risk to the officers. I hate guns and it makes me uncomfortable walking through the mall w/ my hubby knowing he’s carrying a gun HOWEVER we have come face to face with serious criminals who wouldn’t think twice about shooting an off duty cop. You’d be surprised how many illegal guns are on the streets. It’s a totally common occurrence for my husband to make a simple traffic stop and then find a loaded gun in some criminal’s car who’ s already on probation/parole for some hideous crime. The cops always have to be one step ahead.

Once my sweet darling Rosco got out of our house when we weren’t home and a neighbor flagged down a cop. When the cop approached Rosco he barked aggressively at the cop. Luckily DH arrived home at the same time but the cop had his taser out “just in case” while he was waiting for animal control to come.

Anyway poor Zeus I’m sure he didn’t deserve that. God speed poor boy.

You think thats bad, we have an officer in our town who got much publicity b/c in a matter of two months he shot and killed not 1 but 2 dogs ( on separate occasions) while jogging and off duty. He too claimed the dogs "attacked" him. I think he must have the worst luck in the world to be attacked twice by two different dogs while jogging ( note the EXTREME sarcasm dripping from my voice!) BTW, who in the world goes jogging armed with a loaded gun and where exactly do you put it....inquiring minds want to know

Thanks for informing me. My dad was a police officer in the UK but that was years ago & they had to hand their guns in at the end of the shift.

This cop was jogging in upstate NY, not near the community that he works in which is on Long Island.
The article was very vague, and hopefully more of the story will come out over time, however I doubt it.

My heart breaks for this family, and Zeus. Shooting this dog, I feel, is drastic, even if he were on the attack. Even using Mace or Pepper Spray, if he felt threatened by the dog, would have been better than this. Who's to say the dog wasn't rapidly approaching this guy just wanting to play or say hi in only a way boxers can? It's just sad.

Sorry, I don't buy it. I am a probation and parole office and conditional sentence supervisor. I meet with my clients unarmed and run into them continually in the community in which I both live and work. I have sent some of these people to jail, caused others to have their release denied, etc and they are no more fond of PPO's than they are of police officers.
