Never give up

It's so hard to learn that your baby might not be with you much longer. Never give up! Miracles happen every day. But most of all, live life with them to the fullest, and never regret the time spent.

Although I have no dogs with chf, I lived with cardiomyopathy and chf for years. Please do not give up hope - I've been doing relatively well on the combination of drugs prescribed for me. It takes time to find the right combination and the proper dosage, so hang in there. My cardiologist instructed me to weigh myself each morning - if I suddenly gain 2-3 pounds, and/or have shortness of breath, then I know that I am retaining fluid and must take a little extra lasix. I also adhere to a strict salt free diet. Hope your precious furbaby feels better soon, and do keep us posted ~ Cathy

Hi Georgia

So glad you have Belle home with you. It makes all the difference doesn't it? Try not to panic too much when she has her quiet times as we have found that these have got less and less over the last couple of weeks. You might find that you hear the whistling sound you describe first thing in the morning or when she's been sleeping for quite a while but when she's up and about it seems to go away. As the excess fluid goes you'll notice this less, we have with Ruby.

Give Belle a big hug from us.

Good news! Belle had her one week follow-up tonight, and she is doing really well. The chest x-ray showed that most of the fluid in her lungs had resolved, and her heart was not as enlarged as it was a week ago. Also, the ECG showed a regular rhythm with no PVCs. The blood work results will be in tomorrow, so we'll wait until then to add the digoxin into her meds. A good thing with the fluid resolving itself is that we should be able to back off on the Lasix. This medication has been causing Belle to urinate constantly, so it will help to cut it back some. I am looking into taking Belle to a holistic vet. I spoke with someone I really liked this afternoon. Mostly I am looking for someone to counsel us nutrition-wise and also counsel us about supplements. The cardiologist gave us a list of some supplements, but I would like to discuss this with someone further. Also, Belle has some significant areas of hair loss on her back and at the top of neck. The vet tonight thinks it is probably demodex, but we didn't do a skin scraping because I would not use any chemicals to treat it at this time. I'm thinking if we look at nutrition and supplements, and her health begins to stabilize, we will see improvement with regards to the hair loss. Belle is such a sweet girl, and we just love her to pieces, so it is such a relief to know that she is doing good right now. Take care everyone, and give your babies a big hug and kiss from me and Belle!
