Zack wears his all the time, complete with his name and phone number tag, rabies tag, and dog license. There are lots of reasons to leave it on all the time or take it off. I could go either way, but just decide to leave it on. Plus if I do ever take his collar off he gets a really worried look on his face and follows me around until I put it back on. My boy doesn't like to be nekkid. :D

Dallas wears his all the time (except in his crate, but he's not crated regularly). For me, it's important to have the ID tag on him all the time. I had also read some horror stories involving collars, so one day I took collars off while Dallas a foster dog were playing. Well, the foster girl slipped out the front door and ran off. It was horrifying to me knowing that she was loose without identification (especially since she'd only been with me a couple of days and had no idea where she was or how to get back home.) It took about 15 minutes for me to catch her but it felt like hours. Its definitely one of those things where you have to weigh your comfort level with the different risks. I keep the collar snug enough that it would be hard for it to catch on something...and I do watch carefully if I have a foster dog and they are playing. I've also been thinking about getting one of those breakaway collars so I could have the security of knowing he always has his ID tags but lower risk of a choking problem.

On, but loose enough to slip off in case of emergency. When they were crated, the collars came off! When we are home with them, and overnight, we take the collars off, but make sure we know where they are. I also keep afghan blankets out of reach--collar tags love to catch on them. Besides, I don't think my grandmother really intended to knit for the dogs!:D
