Co ownership

Hello I has been looking for a good registered boxer breeder in my area. With all the health testing. I have been in connection with a few in Ontario that show, health test and breed boxers. I have read all there reviews and any information I can about them. Now their puppies are very expensive and I do understand why. Today I was offered a co ownership agreement on a male pup. So I would have to keep him intact until the breeder does the health testing etc to see if he fits into the program. I have to call the breeder to find out how this contract works. Has anyone else on here done this? I just would like information on this topic. What kinds of questions should I ask the breeder?

Co-ownerships can be okay if all the terms are spelled out and everyone is happy with them. Is the dog being shown - who is showing the dog, paying for show fees, will you be traveling to the shows or will the dog stay with someone else etc. If he is to be bred, who gets final say - ie, what if you don't feel his temperament is a good match for breeding, or if you didn't like the female picked out, or if for whatever reason you just don't think a breeding should take place?

It's one of those things where I think each person's rights has to be spelled out clearly, and both sides have to be happy with all terms - if this is your dog that you are purchasing, I'd imagine you don't want someone else to interfere or be able to make a decision regarding your dog that you don't agree with.

That said - I have never co-owned, nor do I ever want to be part of a co-own. They're not bad in themselves, they just more often than not have more complex contracts that go along with them. I guess I maybe should have started by asking what your intention is with the dog - I can see where there might be appeal for someone who wants to show or breed or something, but don't see the benefit for someone who is just looking for a pet.

We co-own

We are still in the early stages. Our boy is only nine months old. The only testing we had done so far is the DM which was negative. We are breathing a sigh of relief since we have an 8 year old that is positive.

We have no desire to breed. However, we have watched this female since she was a baby and we absolutely wanted a pup from her. Unfortunately, something happened during the pregnancy and she had to be spayed so this is her only litter. The only way we could get a pup was to co own. We refused to be responsible for a female and a litter. That is more than we can handle. We were looking for a male anyway because we have a female and do not want to have two females in the same house.

Anyway, the new school of thought is to not neuter until 18-24 months. It allows the dog to completely develop and hopefully avoid some health issues. So we are willing to try. We really did not iron out any details. All I know is that any females that the breeder chooses will come to us or semen will be frozen and shipped. This is our preference, to have it shipped. We have it in our heads that we will not have much involvement. We are on the other side of the country from the breeder. We are not showing him but we are working him. He is excelling in nose work, agility and fly ball. And he starts his CGC class next week. I have no idea how much this means to a potential litter. He has an incredible lineage. I am guessing that will speak for itself. Again, we want little to nothing to do with the breeding aspect of this co ownership. We have a contract and I read it when we picked him up but do not remember any of the specifics. It is a very long contract. The only thing I remember is that we will be reimbursed for testing if we wish. We get pick of the first litter and payment or pick of the litter for subsequent litters if we wish. And it is agreed that he will never leave us for breeding. We are primarily a pet home. All of these dog sports are new to us. I am having the time of my life with this boy. he is so, so smart.
So I dont know what to think about co ownership because we are not dealing with the breeding aspect of it yet. I dont know if any of this information was helpful.
