CKC Registration????? Benefits.....

My boxer Doja recently joined my family, and I haven't registered her yet with CKC..... can anyone tell me what the benefits would be of registering her? I do not plan on breeding her... so, any ideas? I greatly appreciate any info you all might have....

The CKC (Continental, not Canadian Kennel Club), is the club that many puppy mills and backyard breeders. If a breeder has problems registering with the AKC, they can't just fork over some money and the CKC will happily take their money and send out some papers.

I have many of the same questions. After reading on here, I realize CKC isn't the way to go. But I didn't know that before hand. Our breeder may well have been a byb, I don't know. Her dogs weren't raised in her home, not all of them. But the kennel she had them in was very impressive. Clean and neat and all the dogs were very very friendly and loving.

So if anyone has answers to her question I would be very interested as well.

My puppy is CKC becuase her mommy is only CKC.... her daddy is CKC and AKC and has many champions in his bloodline... However, her registration is not the reason I got her, she is my best friend, and not a puppy I would have for show. I am just curious, does anyone have ideas if it would be important to register her through CKC..... if I do not plan on breeding her, would it bring any benefits other than getting a photo pedigree of her family tree???

I don't plan on showing brooke either. She is just for our family to love. I don't think I could show her anyway. Her brindle stripes don't go all the way to her tummy on one side, which I read is unfavorable. (she is getting fixed at about 6 mo.) Again, I would love to hear the answers to her questions.

I can't think of any advantage to registering a dog with the Continental Kennel Club. With the AKC, they at least keep statistics on registrations, litters, etc., they do much to promote purebred dogs, support genetic and health research, etc. Last I knew the ConKC didn't do any of that, so why give them your money? Get an ILP with the AKC instead, if you want, and then you can do Obedience and Agility, too.

There is no benefit to registering her with the CKC (continental kennel club not the candian kennel club). It is the registration for back yard breeders and puppymills that the AKC will not give registration to. I am glad you are spaying your puppies, they will be much better off through life and you can't show a CKC registered dog in AKC events anyway. Dogs don't need to be registered to make wonderful pets and companions. The main reasons for avoiding CKC registered dogs are because the parents are generally not health tested and/or temperament tested or evlauted to even see if they are adequate breeding stock and buying puppies from this source encourages poor breeding practices and greater chances of ill dogs and dogs who do not meet breed standard. That is not saying anything bad about your puppies as pets, of course they are wonderful, but they probably come from questionable places that should really be put out of business. The only benefit from having CKC papers is if it matters to you that you can say i have a "papered dog" but the papers arent worth the paper they are printed on as far as whether your puppy will make a good pet or not (dogs can't read so she'll be just as good a pet without them) and they surely won't benefit you for entering AKC shows. If it was me I wouldn't waste my time and/or money sending it in, especially since you got her just to be your pet.

Just a side note, AKC registration doesn't mean much either if the parent's havent been health and temperament tested and evaluated to ensure that breeding them will benefit the breed. Papers are just papers with no meaning unless the breedings are undertaken in the correct manner.

Now that it has been brought up, what about the APR?? I assume this is also one that BYBs use since it is not AKC. I don't plan on registering Samson for anything but he is APR registered already. He is going to be fixed and his underbite would exclude him from showing anyways. But I was wondering about it, just for future reference, since we are planning to get another boxer as soon as we get a bigger place...
