idiots...

It's amazing how much 1 person's ignorance (and stupidity) can affect so many. I wonder how many other dogs were "labeled" by this "dog expert"!

I am also encountering this strange boxer/pit(etc.) confusion... Lu's a brindle, and not only do I get "HE" instead of "SHE", I also get stupid comments like, "she's very sweet, for a pit..."GRRRRRRRRR!

Also, as a trainer, I see A LOT of rescue dogs. It seems the latest craze to save a dog or pup from being euthanized and/or getting adopted quickly, is to call a pit (or any bully or bully X) a boxer MIX!!

Now, I am a lover of all dogs, and I personally would have no problem owning a pit or any of the bullys. ALL DOGS BITE! It's important to train and also have an HONEST temperment test. Passing off a litter of pit pups that were confiscated in a police raid as boxers or boxer x's is just going to eventually add our beloved babies to the dreaded "list" (actually some ins. co's and localities already lump them in, unfortunately.)

By the way, I know of MANY bullys that are super therapy dogs and even SERVICE dogs! I don't think any specific BREED should be banned, I think breeding, and even dog OWNERSHIP, should be where the regulation belongs. I know that sounds far - fetched, and would be impossible, but if we ban a particular breed, just because of a small groups stupidity, they'll just find another breed ( or "create" a new one!)Some people don't even deserve to be near a dog, let alone OWN one!

Sorry, I got a little carried away for a minute! Good for you for standing up to that ignoramus! All we can do is chip away at these goofballs stupidity - maybe they'll wake up!

Ya I was noticing this while browsing through pet finder. Theres a lot of pits and others labled boxer "Mix". It drives me nuts, and makes me wonder who on earth they have labling these dogs as boxers when they look nothing like one. What on earth are they thinking!

If it came down to someone taking Keela away for being a pitbull or letting it go because she is a "boxer mix" she would suddenly become a boxer mix.

Well, they probably wouldn't believe me - but I would go for it.

There is alot more to it than just mislabeling - sometimes its a chance at a better life.

Please don't think I understand where you're coming from, and I too am right with you. But calling an awesome pit a boxer doesn't help the pit breed, either. I don't think there's really a good answer to this one - wouldn't it be great if we had all the answers? :)

I totally get "the chance at a better life", but I still think the new owner should be informed. I don't even think I'd have a problem if they just didn't say-kind of a don't ask-don't tell... I personally would have no problem owning any of the bullys- I think they're incredible dogs! We always had bostons, and I always wanted a boxer of my own. Lu was rescued from our local shelter with 1 day to live. If she were a pit, or any other bully, she STILL would've come home with me. My neighbor has a pit that she was told was a boxer/lab. Molly is beautiful and is a total sweetheart. When my neighbor took the pup to the vet and discovered her real breed, she was furious. She never had a pure bred dog, and all she knew is that she wanted a short hair medium-medium large dog. She still would've taken Molly, but she then was concerned that there might be something "bad" about her because of her breed. So, I helped her find some breed-specific books, discussed training, and found some websites for her. Molly's now about 5 and has been with my neighbor since about 8 wks. She is dog aggressive to "stranger" dogs, but gets along well with those she knows. And, she's a love bug with people! I think the best chance of a better life begins with honesty and education. That's what keeps these dogs from being mistreated and RETURNING to the shelters! Like I said, if your Keely were mine, and someone tried to remove her from my care, I think I'd call her anything - a poodle mix if I had to, to protect her!

I also think it's a little different if YOU decide Keela's a "boxer mix" than if you were one of the tons of non-educated, and most of the time, well meaning people out there (just skim through the threads about how many ignorant people we run into with OUR dogs) who think they are getting a dog with, let's say boxer/lab personality traits and end up with a breed that needs a well informed and experienced owner. The poor bullys are not the only ones going through this - I also have seen "Golden retriever/husky mixes" - actually chow mixes, complete with black tounge! Again, there's nothing wrong with a chow x, however that's a HUGE personality diff. from a golden (speaking in generalization ONLY! I think we've all met extremes in any breed!)

Do you live in an area with any breed restrictions? I feel so sorry for the prejudice you guys have to endure because of a few bad people. Please don't think I am slighting your girl, or her breed. I hope it didn't sound that way! I actually meant it to be supportive!

Way to go standing up for your baby! I would have gotten so ticked off!!! Way to keep your cool, gather your papers and put her in her place. You know, I have heard that 8 people per year are killed by vending machines. Yes, vending machines. How stupid must a person be to be killed by a vending machine? All I have to say is she better watch herself the next time she gets a soda craving cause she could be the next victim!

New Law

I think we need a "vending machine specific law" to replace the BSLs on dogs!
Something like "all vending machines must be muzzled in public" or something equally inane!

...(he is not AKC registered since his breeder follows ABC and doesn't give papers to register white pups) it all says boxer in the breed section...

Actually, the ABC Code of Ethics does not say breeders should not register of whites. It says they should place them in pet homes and provide limited registration following proof of spay/neuter.

Specifically:
Limited Registration
American Boxer Club Members are encouraged to provide limited registration for the following:

1. Boxers being purchased only as registered companion pets.

2. Boxers that are not considered sound, or not of breeding quality, including monorchids.

3. Boxers of any color not allowed by the standard. Such a Boxer will be placed on a contract, to be signed and a copy retained by all parties, that includes the following provisions:

(i) Limited registration will be provided upon completion of a spay/neuter.
(ii) The new owner will give the breeder a deposit to cover the amount of spay/neuter. This deposit will be returned upon presentation of a certification from a veterinarian that the procedure has taken place.
(iii) The breeder may charge veterinary expenses directly related to the puppy.

And failing limited registration, you would always have the option of getting an ILP number for him. In case you ever need something from the AKC with his breed stated in the future... ;)

Oops. I misspoke on the ABC (I thought it was not registering whites at all) . As a matter of fact the day before this happened I called Carsons breeder and gave her an update on how he was doing etc and that he had just been neutered. I had told her I was going to send the neuter certification to her. She did say something about his papers and sending me $150 back. She had said when I picked him up that upon proof of his neuter she would forward $150 back to me. Doesn't matter to me if he gets AKC limited registration or not. But I might do the ILP number if he doesn't get his AKC reg just for the fact that if there ever is a BSL here or I ever have a problem like i did. Thanks for the info Gmac.

That woman is "bone dumb" as they say here. Fortunately, the city clerk here is an elected post. Also, the vets are allowed to issue the license so its never an issue. The vets know the difference between breeds. Thank goodness!

She was dumber than a bag of bricks and just has hard headed as a brick. Did NOT want to hear what I was saying..in regards to the time frame of licensing him AND his true breed. I don't remember if the Town Clerk is an elected offical. All I know is she's been the town clerk FOREVER! She's a MUCH older woman and really should be retiring soon..whether it be by choice or other ways  The only place a dog can be licensed is the town/city in which the dog resides around here.

Don't be too quick to think vets know the differences between breeds . I have, in the past, had not one but 2 well known and supposedly knowledgable vets around here compliment me on my Pit Bull was beautiful(Blizzy was a white boxer) and my american bull dog..(again referring to Blizzy). My vet now KNOWS a boxer when he sees one, the minute he layed eyes on Carson, the vet dropped to the floor and called "come here you sweet sweet boxer baby" (1st time Carson was ever in the office and the vet had not seen the file)
