Kiti- about them making the dogs sick. The cicadas can make them sick, but they will just get stomach aches and then throw up. Try to keep your dog from eating too many one won't hurt but when you get to 10 the cicadas can make the little tum tums hurt. The dogs have a hard time digesting the exoskeleton. My Brandy got one the other day but she just played with it, kept it in her cheek and spit it out after about five minutes. At first I thought she really ate it. Right now there are millions of these buggers around my house. I had one land on my foot yesterday when I took Brandy out..Scared me!! They are also starting to get pretty loud!

I have been seeing more and more of them at my house in Dayton. I mowed the lawn the other day and ran over atleast a hundred of them (That I could see) We had to clean our patio off yesterday because thee were so many shells and bugs. I let the pups out this morning and it looked like we never cleaned the patio. I walked out of the patio enclosed and 50 of those things must have taken flight. I look at our fence and see hundreds if not thousands of shells. So far it looks like Gunner could care less about them, but Quinsi being a puppy he wants to eat everything. I think he has eaten a couple of them but not enough to make him sick.

I don't remember it being this bad here in Dayton 17 years ago.

Here in Texas we have Diceroprocta vitripennis Stal. Its the first bug on the second website listed above. They arent annoying at all. Beautiful to hear. When I was small my brother use to chase me with the exoskeletons. (jerk) I have seen a few alive, but mainly I see their larva shells and dead adults. We have never had a plague like mentioned above. Thank God cause I hate big bugs.

Lucy and patch were chomping away and I was squirting them with a water bottle and they didnt even care. Lucy came to the door with a wing and half a cicada body missing.. guess she ate the rest. They wouldnt even come inside. I have to not let them out as much I guess.. Funny Patch last night didnt seem to want to walk on the grass and I dont know if it was because they were probably all over the grass (cicadas that is) We havent even hit the bad part yet and I am already grossed out.. Maybe I should go to California or somewhere for a few weeks lol. I dont know if i can handle sweeping them away every day.. ewww.. the stress lol

I remember the last time these things were here...I couldn't take a step without hearing a crunch under my foot! They were everywhere!!!

They're finally here as well...yesterday was the first I saw of them. The kids evidently have learned about them at school because as soon as Tyler saw the thing he screamed "A Cacada!!" as he rushed over and snatched it up.

He carried the thing around (he's 7) until it was time to go. He ended up losing that one just before we left but got another to bring home as a "pet". So, we now have a pet Cicada. Of course, I tried to talk him out of it...telling him the poor thing has been waiting 17 yrs to come out and fly around so he should set it free. Tyler wouldn't have any part of it...he's calling it his pet. He now has the thing in a shoe box with holes poked in the top. He went out to get some sticks, leaves and hard telling what else to put in the box for his pet.

And yes, my daughter is like most girls (she's 9)...."eeeewwww Tyler, get it away"! I had to threaten to throw the thing out the window if he didn't stop scareing Taia...she was nearly in tears on the way home from their baseball practice last night. She's really gonna freak when she walks outside and they start landing on her...

 Had to go look them up. But as a kid, we called them "Katie Dids" but they are the same thing. We have them here when it gets hotter (July) and boy, do they make a racket!! I've never seen my dogs eat any of them however. Maybe they have more gourmet tastes :)
