Brood X
i actually am in awe of this phenomenon....my friend is an entomologist, and he informs me that they are quite tasty (not that i would want to find out for myself!!)
this is from the US forest service website:
"There are actually six different species of periodical cicadas. Three species have a 17- year life cycle while the other three species’ lasts 13 years. There are at least 13 broods of the 17-year cicadas that appear in different places in different years. This is the year for the BIG ONE that scientists call Brood X (the Roman numeral for 10). It covers more than a dozen states, including Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia."
and...
"Spraying insecticides is not effective, so you might as well avoid this. Your dog(s) will quickly discover that the cicadas are fun to eat; while they may get “sick” from eating too many, this will not make them ill – keep a dust pan and carpet cleaner handy."
so there you have it....they havent emerged here yet....and they should die off bt the end of june...
