We get them here in MI, but not by the millions like this "17 year" variety that'll be hatching this spring. My sister lives near DC (Falls Church, VA) and she has thousands of "nests" or holes in her yard where the larvae are. YUCK! She's expecting swarms. Good thing that her dog is a very dignified greyhound who turns her nose up at such trivial things like cicadas -- I can't imagine our boxer boy Dieter out there with 'em; he'd probably drive himself insane trying to catch them all! Good luck to those of you in the areas that will be most hard-hit by these buggers!

I have an Aunt in MD who said that the local paper is asking kids to..

1. Measure their back yard and caluculate the area.
2. Collect and count all the exoskeletons that are in the yard.
3. Send in the information.

Its like they are doing an insect census.....scarey.

oh my god cicadas are here...

Gross! the cicadas are here and my dogs keep eating them. they wont listen and just keep chomping.. How do I get them to stop. Will it make them sick????

Brood X

i actually am in awe of this phenomenon....my friend is an entomologist, and he informs me that they are quite tasty (not that i would want to find out for myself!!)

this is from the US forest service website:

"There are actually six different species of periodical cicadas. Three species have a 17- year life cycle while the other three species’ lasts 13 years. There are at least 13 broods of the 17-year cicadas that appear in different places in different years. This is the year for the BIG ONE that scientists call Brood X (the Roman numeral for 10). It covers more than a dozen states, including Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia."

and...
"Spraying insecticides is not effective, so you might as well avoid this. Your dog(s) will quickly discover that the cicadas are fun to eat; while they may get “sick” from eating too many, this will not make them ill – keep a dust pan and carpet cleaner handy."

so there you have it....they havent emerged here yet....and they should die off bt the end of june...

No cicada season here (kinda funny)

One of the big advantages of living near Bogota is that we are so high in the mountains (8600 ft) that we dont have bug problems. When we lived in another Army base back in '02 we had all kind of problems: ticks, fleas, ants hey you name it, we have it here in the Tropic. But then again no cicada season like you guys have to go through. They are around all year long but not in big phenomenal numbers like you guys describe it to be.
Plus I don't mind bugs anymore, it takes a few years of walking (patrolling) in the lovely colombian outdoors to get use to them but my wife dies a liitle everytime a moth flies in the house
Good luck with your cicada season and to all your furkids: "bon appetit"
