Dozens of collection banks stolen in past month

By LAURA CZEKAJ, Ottawa Sun

A recent spate of thefts from local charities raising money to help out the community has claimed another victim -- the Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind. In the past month, and especially this last week, thieves have stolen about a dozen of the organization's plastic guide dog banks stationed at area stores.

The plastic puppies are a huge revenue generator for the agency, which uses the money to train guide dogs for the visually impaired.

"It actually accounts for approximately 25% of our operating budget, which essentially means that those collection dogs are actually directly responsible for providing 25% of all guide dogs that are trained in Canada," said spokesman Steven Doucette.

THOUSANDS LOST

While the organization wanted to keep under wraps exactly how much money has been taken, Doucette said it was in the thousands. It will also cost about $200 to replace each stolen bank.

"It's lost revenue that basically can't be made up and especially considering we are at the end of the year and we are planning for training guide dogs for next year," he said.

At least once a month, a donation dog is stolen somewhere in Canada, said Doucette. Yesterday alone, seven dogs went missing, leading Doucette to believe it could be the work of the same thieves.

Anyone wanting to donate to Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind can call 692-7777 or log on to www.guidedogs.ca.

It is not the only case of thievery this Christmas season.

On Dec. 8 thieves stole two Salvation Army donation kettles, containing between $400-$500, from a room at the Carlingwood Mall.
