Hemangiosarcoma

I have been doing some research, and as well some investigating with Choppers death and found out some information from his Vet. Found out that Chopper had what is called hemangiosarcoma. I then did some more research on the internet and found this article;
http://www.americanboxerclub.org/purina5.html

Please, read it pass it on to others. maybe even paste in Health section of boxerworld forum. I hope everyone is aware of this terrible disease. It took Chopper away from me, and I never so any signs before hand to warn me.

It’s been a little over 2 weeks now since chopper died. It still is very hard to get pass the fact he is gone. Especially when I look at my empty back yard, or if I'm outside doing yard work for which he was always outside with me. Neighbors must think I've lost it, if they saw me crying while cutting grass.

God knows I've tried to focus and think of all the great memories we had together with him full of life. But for some reason I'm drawn back into weeping tears and tremendous heartache, for which my mind goes into the last days he spent with us. Then comes the real heartache when his last hour images of him are popping in my head of him lying on the living room floor, images of him in my car life-less, and then the image of him on the examination table at the Vet when he was pronounced dead before the doctors could do anything. Then I remember the doctors expression for which she just broke down in tears along with the nurses in the room. It is so difficult to shake, I wonder if I didn't do enough. I start thinking about maybe I should have known something. I wish I could go back in time, and even if I can't/or could change anything at least to tell him for the last time "I love him", and that he was such a good boy.
The wife and kids I believe are for the most part okay. But for me, he was very close too and that's why I guess its been the hardest. He was a true companion for me, more then mans best friend, to me he was everything. He was their when I was sad, upset, highs and lows for the 6 years I adopted him. We had so many happy times together, so many times I and the whole family would be their just laughing at the so many goofy things he would do.

I guess with time those last disturbing images of chopper will fade away, for which only the good ones will remain.

I want to thank everyone again on this forum for your sympathy and well thoughts during this time of sadness. I can tell you once again it's been very difficult for me, but you have made it much easier to deal with the loss.

Thanks Again

Bill, your post brought tears to me. I truly understand how you are feeling, and the impact that your Chopper's passing has on you. You were blessed with a special relationship and bond with your boy, and when you lost him, your life and world as you knew it went with him - he was a vital part of all of it. I lost my Grunt in February, and I can tell you I don't think I will every be the same, nor will my life. I loved that boy so much and always will, just like you love Chopper. In time, the extreme pain you are feeling will go away, the tears won't be so constant, and you will be able to think of him and smile sometimes. To be honest, I don't think the ache from losing our soulmates and best friends ever goes away.......not when you've had a once-in-a-lifetime dog. I hope each day will get a little easier for you. It's tough right now....take care.

My last boy that passed away was also here one minute and gone the next. Lying at my feet looking up at me and took that last breath, I thought my heart would break and it did. But I did take solace in the fact that it was quick and I was there with him. He had a good life, running free in his yard, swimming at the beach, riding in the car, going on walks with mom and dad, harassing the cats. That was what got me through the sad times, we should all have led such a life and given so much of ourselves to those we love. Please don't allow Chopper's passing to bring you down too much. It's normal to have regrets and try to second guess what you should or could have done for Chopper - but you gave him the greatest gift you could - a wonderful life. Please take care and I will be thinking of you.

Thanks for your reply Grunt and Suzyq moms. Don't get me wrong, I am not new to a pet passing, when my other dogs passed I was upset as well. But, for some reason this is much worse, I was really close. Chopper was my first boxer, and I picked this breed because at the time my daughter wanted one. You see, she was so afraid of dogs in general. We have cousins that own a boxer and when my daughter would go over to visit she would pet and huge this boxer. My daughter would only do this with this dog, any other dog/s she would be so scared to go near, even other family dogs. So I decided that was the breed we would go for and since their were so many in the rescues I figured this is were we should get our pet, ( I wanted to save a life).
Chopper made it so easy, when he came into our lives. He made my daughter and son feel so comfortable around him so quickly, they were able to huge and kiss him, play and he learned so many neat tricks. He amazed all of us on how well behaved he was. Yes, he had his sneaky and misbehaved moments (counter surfed once in awhile). I would take that back in a heartbeat now, which any the bad was nothing now and was really nothing to me then when he was alive.
The hardest and most difficult things for me right now is remembering his
usual day-to-day routines he had from morning, noon, and night. The hardest of those was he had a bedtime around 8:00pm every night he would put himself in one of his beds. It didn't matter who was visiting he somehow would pretty much go to bed. The hardest part is even though he put himself in bed and after all of us would go to bed he would get up and make his rounds, by going into each bedroom and going up to each person in bed sniffing them. Then he would come to me and do the same, while sometimes sighing or licking as to tell me everyone is safe and accounted for. Sometimes he would sit their waiting for me to wake up by sighing or yawning in my face. He would go away when I would pat his head or pet him. I now lay their many nights waiting for him, for which I know he won't be coming. This just makes me tear up, this is very hard to forget.

He taught me so much while he was here with us. He was such a caring boy, and very close family member.

Thanks
Bill

I know exactly what you are going through Bill. It's been almost 3 months since we lost our Quincy unexpectedly.
His personality was so unique.
We always knew when it was 9:30 p.m. because he would lay on the couch and his eyes would be so droopy, and he'd give you that look to say, "Hey, isn't it bedtime yet".
Also, what I miss the most is waking up in the morning. He would stand beside me in bed, with his face 2 inches from mine. He would not touch me, but just stand there breathing on me. As soon as he saw my eyes flicker open, he would smother me with kisses. It was my favourite time of the day.
I still cry some mornings when I'm just laying there thinking about him and how I wish he was there to watch me wake up.
There are times when for no reason (just driving home from a friends place) that I will start to cry because I thought about him.
I know it takes time before tears can turn to smiles, but I'm not there yet.
It would be great to be able to get together to share stories and tears with people such as you and others who have lost their babies. Sometimes my husband and I feel so alone in our grief and that others do not quite understand how we can still feel so sad with the loss of our boxer.
Anyways, sorry for getting so long winded, especially on your post for your baby.
Just wanted to say, I know where you are coming from and understand the tears that you still shed.
My thoughts go out to you on your loss.

Boxer love is special ,I never cried so much in my life after our decision with Beau,he was so special & our hearts still ache for him.We do cry less & such happy memories of our good times with him come more often now
We understand your feeling about Chopper, once you experience that type of love it does take time to rebound,Boxer have such a unique personality, unlike any other dog I have had
People here on the board are a great help,as they understand the love of a boxer
Thinking of all who have lost a special friend, think of them all having fun over the rainbow bridge

If nothing else at least we have boxerworld and this forum to share our grief. It is a little different then speaking face to face. Sometimes a little difficult to write about it as well. My grief is just slightly more complex, my wife does not share this same hardship as I do. I was the one who had a special bond with chopper, my feelings for him out-tipped the scale of overall compassion and companionship. My wife, mother-in-law feel sad about chopper, but not devastated like I am. The kids are teens and they are too sad about chopper, for them they are young and have active lives to keep themselves occupied.
Tracy, I know of your pain and am sorry to hear about your boy Quincy. We know and have that unconditional love for this breed, and as Just-A-Clown mentioned; Boxers are unique unlike any other dog. How true this is, for I could not imagine taking on any other breed.

Thanks
Bill
