For those that haven't read my posts, we having struggled with skin issues since she was eight weeks old. Luna was recently tested and diagnosed with severe ( 5000 score ) allergies to 21 environmental , and 11 food allergies. We have a great vet, who is using a combination of western medicine and homeopathic treatments in a bid to avoid steroids if we can. She referred us to a specialist canine chinese herbalist. This is all a very alien concept to me, but I have an open mind and am willing to try anything to help my baby.

It was very interesting and completely different from western medicine. I was initially trying to show the vet all her rashes and bumps and scratched areas .... and of course, she wasn't in the least bit interested in these outward manifestations !

Firstly, there was no sense of rush. We were the only client there. She asked me all about Luna's daily life, in detail ... what she does, how she behaves, her food preferences, how she sleeps, how active she is, if she likes to be out in the sun, how she is after exercise , etc, etc. She spent a long time just talking to Luna, stroking her, feeling her body, looking at her in general. She felt her pulse points for ages. Observed her breathing. Laid her hands on different parts of her body to feel her body heat. Looked closely at her tongue.

She diagnosed Luna as having an excess of yang. Yin being the cooling forces of the body and yang being the heat. In a healthy dog, both would be equally balanced. An excess of yang ( warm energy ) in Luna is resulting in inflamed skin, restlessness, scratching. This imbalance of the Yin and Yang creates "wind" in the body. Its a hard concept to grasp, ( and I didn't ! ) but the internal processes of the body are classified by elements ( earth, water, fire, wind etc). In a nutshell the yin and yang disparity has caused a blood and liver deficiency and a temperature imbalance, ( these 3 being the "wind" ) which is all manifesting as skin and coat problems.

I can confirm that Luna is indeed a hot dog .... its like sleeping next to a radiator with her in bed. She is also a very calm puppy, spends a lot of time just laying quietly, always has been ..... which is apparently her coping mechanism to keep her body temperature lower.

She is also drawn to any water, a hose, a tap, the shower, loves to get wet at any opportunity ...or will even continually dunk her entire head and paws in the dogs water bowl. All now makes sense, that she is trying to cool herself.

She has been prescribed a herbal combination called " Si Wu Xiao Feng Yin " ..... which consists of about 20 different herbs, the only one I recognise, being Angelica. These are cooling herbs and liver support designed to expel the "wind" and nourish the blood.

In addition she is to be fed "cool" foods and is to avoid "hot" foods. Cool foods are fish, duck, rabbit, brown rice, barley, broccoli, apples, bananas, pears, cucumber, lettuce and mushrooms. Hot foods are turkey, chicken, lamb, venison, shrimp and lobster ( as if !! ), sweet potatoes, squash and pumpkin.

Food is going to be an issue, she is currently on a lamp protein kibble ..... she is allergic to all fish, and I know I won't get rabbit ! She can have beef, though, that is considered neutral.

She is also to be given flax seed oil supplements and natural active yogurt, daily- both have cooling properties on the body.

Dr. Belle said that she has seen amazing results with this herbal combination .... and I should notice an improvement within two weeks, and a big difference within a month. I have a six week supply to give it a fair shot.

Wish us luck !

It will be very interesting to see how it works out. It seems like feeding Dante turkey and sweet potato is not a good idea. :(

Not necessarily Jan ... some dogs with skin allergies have too much Yin ( Cool energy ) ... these would be your dogs who are high energy, always on the go, restless, ( keeping moving to create internal warmth ). Typically seek warmth, bask in the sun, like to sleep close to a warm body, seem to get cold easily in cooler temperatures.

Of course its not as simple as that ! The herbalist also measured the "energy" by the pulse rate also, and differences in pulse strength at different points. Together with the "energy", she would look at how it is menifested in the individual dog ... Luna is a "windy" dog ( When the vet first said that I actually asked if that meant she has a lot of gas !!! LOL ) .... but there are many different earth elements depending on the internal body processes that are responsible for the allergies. I think these were diagnosed by the appearance of the tongue.

I have to admit, to someone brought up with main-stream western medicine and science, it does sound like a load of hocus pocus ... and it is complicated ! I have way simplified it, as that's the only way I could get my head around it. Lol.
But there are things that she told me that really make sense, and traditional chinese medicine has been used for thousands of years, so there has to be something to it.

Like everyone says, its a really interesting journey, and hopefully we will see success on the way !

Having my doubts if this is helping, or making it worse

It's only just a week that I have given the herbs a chance, so I am not sure what to do. Luna's skin seems WORSE. She has broken out in bumps all over the top of her head, where she has never had skin problems before, and is scratching at her face, legs and flanks more than usual. her poor hind quarters have lost quite a bit of hair. I am wondering if she could be allergic to the herbs ????

The only reason I am in two minds is that it is excessively windy here at the moment, meaning lots of different allergens ( pollens etc ) could be blowing our way.

I am going to phone the vet to see if she thinks I should discontinue, or not.

Bummer :-(

I have a friend doing this with her cocker spaniel. Took her a long time to see results, or that's my understanding. Hard to keep track! Maybe I'll try directing her to this thread. :)

My understanding of how things like that work is that they will make things worse before they get better. like, the herbs 'force' the allergens from the body or something, and so the symptoms (expressions of healing, according to the theory) get worse as her body gets rid of the bad stuff, then clears up as her body heals itself. I'm not sure if I buy that, but I think that is how they explain it.

Thanks Stub .... I am not sure I buy that either, but I do know what you mean, and I have also heard of that theory with certain treatments. The herbalist said that I would see an improvement within 2 weeks, she didn't mention that it would get worse first ... which I would think would be a pretty pertinent thing to have warned me of !

Maybe I have a ditsy herbaliist and all will be fine :)

I am fascinated by holistic care & herbal therapies for our beloved babies. Sorry to hear that she is seemingly reacting... How is Luna?? Are you continuing her herbal treatments?

Well, I couldn't get hold of the vet who practices the Chinese medicine as she is not at the practice at the moment .... so I had continued to give them to her, just in case it was a normal process. However last night I was up at 2am, to give an extra antihistamine, and massage coconut oil on her, to try to stop the relentless scratching and biting .... and she hasn't scratched like that during night-time sleep EVER. So I have not added the herbs to her breakfast this morning, as I just couldn't bear to give them to her in case it IS making things worse.

The vet is to call me as soon as she gets back to work. I will let you know what she says.
