Chicken Necks

Are chicken necks as good as chicken backs?

My guys have been on chicken backs for the past year as their primary source of RMB's. The order that I just got (40 lbs) is all chicken necks (there was miscommunication somewhere).

I liked chicken back best becuase I felt that (and I have read) that they have the perfect meat to bone ratio. The necks look a little less meaty than the backs, and less fat too.

Should I be careful and make sure to suppliment with more meat in their diet else where?

Will they be OK eating necks as their RMB's for the next two months? That's how long this order will last us.

Your feedback would greatly appreciated (yes, I am still a newbie:rolleyes: )

Chicken necks are just dandy! They will be fine on them for two months and you *will not* have to supplement with more meat. However they might not last as long as two months because you have to feed more of them. They do not weight the same as backs. Backs are about 1/2 a pound where necks are roughly 1/8 of a pound. So you will have to count them out accordingly. Backs do have offal attached to them which is a plus, but you can give another source of offal for the time being. :D

Good point about going through the necks faster... I still weigh out each meal, so I am sure the dogs will LOVE having their bowls FILLED with necks!!!

Actually I like chicken necks better than backs. I have to cut my baby's (2.5 years) food up and I like cutting necks better. I just think because the neck has a spinal cord it's better for him. But unfotunately a don't have the choice of necks or backs. My chicken packages come with both necks and backs.

My guys started on wings, but I was finding sharp pieces of bone in their poo and I didn't feel comfortable with that.

They have been getting backs for almost a year now without any troubles. All I do is cut the back in half (down the spine) and they crunch them up no problem.

When I was looking at the necks I was thinking that I shouldn't need to cut them up at all (and I was happy about this!), they are much smaller than the backs (half of a back) that they are used to.

Should I cut them do you think? Is there a greater risk of them choking in the necks?

I don't think you have to cut those up. The bones in the neck are similar to the bones in the back. If your guys handle back bones alright and you aren't finding bone pieces in their poo then they'll do fine with necks. :D

I feed chicken necks every morning and some nights.

My furkids do great with them. I just saw the size of a turkey neck, and WOW what a difference. Chicken necks are just the right size for this household of boxers.

Once every few weeks, Desi has gotten sick and I see the bones, but he is a special case in that he has a few digestive issues. He is still receiving enzymes through the homeopathic vet.

My thoughts exactly :D When we used to feed whole turkey necks, we ended up buying a hatchet to chop them up with!

I'm too paranoid to feed backs so I feed necks and also wings on occasion. Necks are our mainstay and have been for 2 years, so far, so good

I have to say that I am really enjoying NOT having to cut up the chicken every night for dinner!

The necks are perfect! The smaller necks are swallowed whole, and the larger ones only take one crunch before they go down

My guys seem to be doing just fine! It's all chicken to them. Their stools seem normal too.

I think I may start to order the necks instead (or at least one box of each when I do my orders from now on) - they are the same price, and easier for me to manage (less time consuming!).
