IMO, anything that's small enough to easily fit into a dogs mouth & is not food is not safe.
Therefore personally I wouldn't let either of my boxers play with golf balls.
Besides, I lose enough of them on the course without the dogs help.

Too small. Try tennis balls. My girls absolutely love tennis balls.

My dogs too do enjoy playing with tennis balls. The mixbreed tho ever so daintily rips the yellow/green/orange or white furry stuff off the ball and leaves in a fairly neat pile for Mom to clean up. Then the two of them cart the balls around the house and outside. Tessa enjoys scooting around the ceramic tile kitchen floor with the furless ball (when she can get one away from stepbrother Heinz.)

Racquetballs are great, too. A little smaller than tennis balls without the fuzzy covering.

Scrapper has a soccer ball he likes to work on. Tennis balls are much loved, too!

I would NEVER give my boxer a golf ball! He could easily swallow it, and get it stuck in his throat.
