I'm so sorry you lost your dog this way. They were probably just playing with the goats, not really hurting them. I've reminded neighbors of mine about this Texas law when they allowed their dogs to chase my horses. Not that I would ever shoot anyone's dogs, but just so they would make their dogs stop chasing the horses. There are also tons of strays around here, and I chase them off with tear gas. Sounds like the Sheriff's department sent a couple of rednecks, who shouldn't have been carrying weapons in the first place. Deepest sympathy on the loss of your beloved Chavez. :(

I'm a little confused though. Were these YOUR goats or a neighbors?
The action does seem a bit extreme for 'first-time offenders.' :(

Unfortunately, as Julie pointed out, any dog "threatening" livestock can, within the law, be killed. The dog does not have to have contact or injure the livestock either, chasing, barking, or otherwise harassing is all it takes.

I suppose this is a sad reminder that everyone needs to keep close tabs on their dogs.
