My boxer was killed today (Chavez) and our other boxer (Mia) was shot in the leg. The Sheriff's Department shot them. They said they had a call about some dogs killing a goat. They told me that when they got there they saw my dogs knocking down a little goat, no bite marks on it. They shot my dogs!! Then they never found a dead goat! I'm so pissed. It was the first time they got out, (I think). I have about 20 goats and they've never hurt them.:(

:( I'm soooo sorry to hear your sad news. Is Mia going to be okay? Kona is sending her slobbers and wiggles for a speedy recovery. And the whole family sends our prayers for Chavez.

I am so sorry to hear about your babies. I felt sick reading about this. I cannot imagine what you must be going through. This is not the first time this has happened, unfortunately. It sounds like you need to get in touch with the Sheriff's Department to see what kind of recourse you have. Again, I am so terribly sorry to hear about that. I hope Mia recovers soon. It doesn't seem reasonable that they would kill dogs over a goat. Was it on your property or someone else's?

Every member of BW should contact your Sheriffs Dept. to tell them how apalled we are at the way they handled this. Even the local humane society should be notified. Just because they are law enforcements officers doesn't give them a license to be cruel to animals. I would call the local news channel and anyone else who would listen me.

I am so sorry for your troubles. I don't even know what to say.

OMG I cannot belive this! I have heard of things like this happening in rural areas before! This is just horrible! Does anyone know what can be done?? I am SOOOO sorry for you! That just makes NO SENSE! So theoretically someone could be pissed at you, let your dogs out, then call the sherrif and say the dogs are doing something terrible and they'll come shoot the dog with no proof that anything even occurred!!!!????!!! ARGH!!! I'm PI$$ED!!!!

Poor Chavez, I hope that Mia was not seriously wounded. My heart goes out to you and your family.

Did they even try to contain the dogs at all? Did they try to catch them using a noose? Does your sheriff department always respond to animal control calls?

I am very sorry for your loss. :(

For those who are asking, it is the law in most if not all states that dogs found "worrying" livestock may legally be killed.

The law in Texas states:
§ 822.033. Dogs That Attack Domestic Animals

(a) A dog that is attacking, is about to attack, or has recently attacked sheep, goats, calves, or other domestic animals or fowls may be killed by any person witnessing or having knowledge of the attack.

(b) A person who kills a dog as provided by this section is not liable for damages to the owner of the dog.

(c) A dog known or suspected of having killed sheep, goats, calves, or other domestic animals or fowls is a public nuisance. Any person may detain or impound the dog until the dog's owner is notified and all damage done by the dog has been determined and paid to the proper persons.

(d) The owner of a dog that is known to have attacked sheep, goats, calves, or other domestic animals or fowls shall kill the dog. A sheriff, deputy sheriff, constable, police officer, magistrate, or county commissioner may enter the premises of the owner of the dog and kill the dog if the owner fails to do so.

Another reason that many breeders and rescues insist on fenced yards.
