My Boxer always run out in front of cars but sometimes she will go to the side of the road and duck down. How do I make her stop?

Have her in a fenced in yard or tie her up!! It is extremely important that you get her to stop this behaviour or there is going to be an accident 1 day and you may no longer have her!! My brothers dog did this all the time and they figured because they lived in the country...what harm would it be to NOT tie him up or pen him? He chased a garbage truck up to the highway...saw other vehichles moving faster and I guess he thought that might be more fun chasing the faster ones. My brother got a call later that day explaining how Boomer's body had to be scraped up off the highway!! There wasn't much left of him to bury...he was hit by a transport! He was a shephard/rotti mix and his body was placed in a shoe box!!! :( PLEASE keep your dog fenced in or tied up if you have to. This is a situation that can be easily prevented.

How horrible - that must have been absolutely devastating, I could not imagine!!

The other day, I was going out to Mark's parents house (in the country), and luckily driving slow and there was a German Shepard puppy on the road (probably a couple of months). He looked at me and I stopped to let him cross, but I think he got confused and turned around and a van came so close to hitting him. The guy in the van ran off in the ditch to avoid it. The pup ended up running off into what looked like a long driveway so I was just hoping that that is where he lived (I was going to pick him up otherwise).

Then I turned down another road and saw what looked to be a Boxer/something mix running alongside of the road and when I stopped, he looked at me and ran off into a field.

Please have a fenced in yard or tie her up (like Xenaprincess says) ... I have seen one too many animals on the side of the road, and none of them deserve to be there...

Keeping our Honey away from the road

Our back yard is mostly fenced in except that my husband has'nt finished puting the railing on on the deck around our pool due to the cold weather and snow. My daughter posted this last question about her always running out in front of cars. Our Honey Boxer does'nt do this often. I know how important it is to keep her away from the road. When we are waiting for the school bus we always keep her on leash because she can't be trusted yet like our 8 year old Boston terrier. We do live in the country and try to watch her carefully. We have been out with her and been going to get the mail and she has chased cars even though we told her to come or sit and stay. When she is excited she does't allways want to listen. So I always put her on leash to get the mail now or don't let her come along. I hope with time she will always listen and we will beable to trust her in the front yard.

I had once seen an episode on animal planet where the trainer was teaching the dog not to run out the door everytime the door is opened. If I'm not mistaking for training purposes they hooked a closeline rope to the dog's collar and everytime the dog ran out the door the person was to call the dog back then give a gentle tug back towards the door. Then praised the dog for coming back to the door.

My trainer taught Hailey, "Place." I keep a dog bed in the foyer and if I go to open the door I tell her Place and she will immediately stand on her bed until I give her release. Too bad out of the four she's the only one who knows that command. I'd definately do something to prevent your dog from running out to chase cars.

Unless you feel that your dog can be trusted to stay when told, I would never take the chance. I have a 5yr old Tibetan Terrier that listens 'most of the time' but its that small chance that I won't take, so while we are always working on it, until he can be trusted he is not allowed out the front of our house without a leash. And Roxy, at only 1yr listens really well. I believe that it is 80% training and 20% just their personality....:)
Good Luck and be careful,

I also live out in the country, but I leave Titan leashed up outside- he has plenty of room to run and play and he loves it. Although we live on a country road, I guess ppl think noone else drives/walks on it but them so they feel the need to drive like 40mph flying by--peeves me off b/c Titans' sister crosses the road to come to our house about 5-10 times a day. I do spy on her and walk her home a lot, but she does stop to look both ways (I think she watches us do that) but I worry what would happen if a car comes. If she follows us from her house she stops at the drive and lets the car go then she crosses the road behind us and up into the field that leads to our house. And I would absolutely stop the playing by the road, hiding and chasing cars thing right now. It was a dumb game for the dog to start and nothing positive can come of it. Make up for it with extra inside games to use up the extra energy she has.

My current boxer is about 98% on his recall, we are still working on perfecting it. My previous boxer was horrible at recall and we could never really trust him to come back when called. I lost a mix I rescued several years ago when he was hit by a car and I am still horrified by the event. Please take every measure possible with your boxer baby, good luck.

It only took a second-sorry long.

I lost my wonderful Dusty because I thought I could trust him, too. He was great on recall-about 98% of the time. I had him and Pooh out in the back yard, both on leashes-even though Pooh won't go out of the yard.It was playtime before I went to work. Brought them back to the house and I have to come down past my garage. Stopped at the door to do the foot wipe thing,Pooh was done and standing beside me. I had unhooked Dusty's leash to let him in,turned around for 1 second to grab the towel and he took off down my driveway after a squirrel. I live on a very busy main street-4 lanes. The person that hit him never even stopped. My beautiful boy was gone instantly. He was 2 weeks from his first birthday. I still feel the guilt and sit here crying now because I miss him so much and I could have prevented it. My neighbor helped me carry him back up my driveway to the garage where I sat and held him for hours apologizing to him and crying my heart out. Somehow I managed to call my dh at work,he made a usually hour drive home in 20 minutes.I wouldn't let him take him from me.
Please keep your baby leashed and safe. The heartbreak is unbearable.

Yup happened to us once too. I was at work. DH was haome with the kids. we live in the country too. Well DD age 7 at the time let our little peek-a -poo outside to play with her in the back yard. Well he ran into the front yard(even tough he never did before) and he ran into our usuallt quiet road and was killed instantly. It only does take a second. Now Ginger & Buddy are always leashed.
