It only took a second-sorry long.
I lost my wonderful Dusty because I thought I could trust him, too. He was great on recall-about 98% of the time. I had him and Pooh out in the back yard, both on leashes-even though Pooh won't go out of the yard.It was playtime before I went to work. Brought them back to the house and I have to come down past my garage. Stopped at the door to do the foot wipe thing,Pooh was done and standing beside me. I had unhooked Dusty's leash to let him in,turned around for 1 second to grab the towel and he took off down my driveway after a squirrel. I live on a very busy main street-4 lanes. The person that hit him never even stopped. My beautiful boy was gone instantly. He was 2 weeks from his first birthday. I still feel the guilt and sit here crying now because I miss him so much and I could have prevented it. My neighbor helped me carry him back up my driveway to the garage where I sat and held him for hours apologizing to him and crying my heart out. Somehow I managed to call my dh at work,he made a usually hour drive home in 20 minutes.I wouldn't let him take him from me.
Please keep your baby leashed and safe. The heartbreak is unbearable.
