Can anyone help on our new situation? Des has been with us since Sunday and liked his crate straight away. For the first nights he slept in it well with only a bit of whining, but last night he messed . He normally has his last outside venture at around 11.30 and I get up at 7 with him in the morning. My boyfriend is working call and was called out on Tues morn at 6am and took Des for his wee and poo but this morning it was 7 with me again. Could this 1 hr change in routine be the cause??? Thanks for any opinions

I suspect that he is just too young to go that long. ;) Maybe he cried and you didn't hear him in time?? My baby that is about 5 weeks older still usually can't go that long. Does he sleep near you?

I know it is a long time for the lil fella and I do sleep v heavy. His crate is in the back living room. Hes got quite a large crate for him to grow into as the first we got seemed a bit small. He does like the small 1 though as he has this for resting in the kitchen

Does he not get a potty break in the middle of the night? If not, then you should try taking him out to go potty every night more often. Even my two boys who are 2 and 3 years old still have to go potty in the middle of the night. They just can't hold there potty for that long, espeically puppies. When he finally does go potty outside, praise him like crazy and give him a treat right then.

Also, when you put him in the crate, try giving him a special treat meant just for the crate. Maybe if you move the crate in your bedroom will help calm him down. I know, I kept my two right near my bed and would just stick my fingers in the crate when they started to whine. He would smell that I was close by and go back to bed.

Good Luck :)

If the crate is too big, your pup will mess in it.
I'd suggest either sectioning the big one off, or letting him sleep in the small one at night (I'm presuming it is big enough for him to stand up and turn around in)

I havnt been taking him out at night so far. I will start tonight and put him in the smaller crate and try that. Thanks for the advice, when we got him I forgot all the questions I should have asked the breeder, am so glad I found this site!!

To be honest you're quite lucky that he'd held it from 11.30pm - 7am in the first place. I had to let mine out through the night as pups.

Have got Desmond back in the smaller crate and hes doing well. By the rate hes growing he wont be in it for long though!! Hes found his own place outside to do his business with a few accidents confined to the kitchen but hes getting there. Has anyone tried these pee pee pads? we have them for during the day if we are gone longer than an hr but all Dezzy wants to do is eat or play with them not pee on them.
