CC Thieves in Florida

I'm sure this is going on all over the country, but I've only read about it happening down here. There was an article in one of the local papers last week and it scares the heck out of me. It seems everyday we're all less safe financially speaking because of these 'crooks'. They've got this machine, which I guess is the same or similar to the ones they use at restaurants that copy the card, but with this one they put it up or into the gas pumps outside and are able to get ALL the card numbers used at that pump!! The article stated that this started on the west coast of Florida and has now worked it's way over to the east coast. I've tried purchasing gas from inside and the people behind the counter have always told me "no, we/you can't do that". I wonder if I made a stink if they would allow it. Either that all I'll have to go to the ATM to get cash and then go to the gas station.

Has anyone else heard about this going on where they live??

Here in Spain it is been done on cashpoints (ATM - I think), it is mainly eastern european gangs that are doing it (please no offence to any eastern europeans on here), I have given up using the machines where possible and go in straight to the bank itself.

I havent heard this.. It is so sad that these people have no values to live on their own honestly...

I know my sister had stopped at a local gas station.. It wouldn't read outside so knowing that they could read it inside she pumped her gas first. When she went in to pay they refused and then threated to charge her with stolen gas if she left to go to the ATM across the street even if she left her wallet. Needless to say she left her car at the pump while she looked through her seats and floorboards for enough change.. No one us shop there anymore

I work fraud and security for Bank of America (formerly MBNA) in Canada. I hate to say this but your card (credit or debit) can be skimmed just about anywhere....ATM's, gas stations (paying inside or outside), resturants, local stores......Card skimmers (the external kind) are no bigger than a pager.....It is vary alarming at how big this has become. It has been around for a few years now. We see huge losses at work due to this. I would say it has become more popular than the theft of the actual card.....
