Back from OSU - Good/Bad/Indifferent

Well... $920 later... we STILL don't have a definitive answer! They did a 3-view chest x-ray, abdominal CT scan, and thyroid CT scan - ALL OF WHICH CAME BACK NORMAL. They aspirated the nodule on his leg and it was just a fatty tissue lipoma. His calcium there was up to 15 which is very alarming according to them and at 16 they would have kept him overnight. Because his hypercalcemia continues to worsen, they are worried about renal failure and tomorrow we need to begin Promidronate IV - which is $400 to infuse. I love my doggie to death, but this is already financially draining me. They told me that they (OSU Staff) as well as my vet here in pittsburgh are both 90% sure it is lymphoma, but they just cannot locate the source as of yet. The Promidronate will help his calcium for approx. 3 weeks giving his kidneys a break, but then it would have to be repeated as this is just treating a symptom, they still do not have an answer as to where this lymphoma may be hiding - if that's what it is - although they are assuring me it is. Now we have to sit and wait for lumps to appear..... Doesn't sound right to me, but 2 different Vets are agreeing with this plan of treatment. Then they turn around and tell us that if nothing is done and it is lymphoma, he would only survive about 6 weeks without treatment, but they cannot treat because they cannot find it. Any suggestions? Thank you all so much for your well-wishes and hugs.... we are just beside ourself.

Unbelievable!

I can't imagine how upset you must be, and how frustrated! My heart goes out to you and I hope that somehow, something good happens to you for a change! Sending very good healing vibes your way.

Ask them about using Cytoxan and Prednisone? This is what my Kiddo was on when diagnosed with lymphoma. The prognosis was the same-6 weeks with no treatment 3-6 months with treatment. Hopefully they are all wrong about the lymphoma.

Off to the Vet today

We take Max today for his Promidronate infusion this morning to try to lower his calcium. He seems to be sleeping a tad bit more (but it is really hard to tell because he ALWAYS sleeps - 24 hour morning breath :o) Will keep everyone posted.

So Far So Good

Max did wonderfully with his infusion and actually has been so much more alert and active today. As I mentioned earlier, this is not a cure for whatever is causing the hypercalcemia, only managing it. We will get the PTHT (parathyroid) test back by Friday of next week so hopefully we will have some kind of an answer. Thats it. Thanks again for all of your thoughts and good vibes :o)
