I wonder if lifting the leg is a learned behaviour. Vegas is 2 now but up until about a year or so he would only squat. Then we were babysitting a friends male dog. We were in the back yard and the older dog lifted his leg on a tree. Vegas was watching him, them did it himself in another area of the back yard. So it wasn't like he was marking his territory over the older dog, it looked like he learned it. Ever since he lifts his leg, although he still squats sometimes when he is lazy. Does anyone think this is a learned behaviour or just a coincidence?

Harley is around 3 to 4 and rarely lifts his leg. He doesn't squat like a girl he kind of lowers his butt a little and lifts one leg about 1/2 an inch off the ground. If there is a tree or something he will lift his leg, but for his first big pee he goes on the grass.

Beau doesn't squat, he just stands there on all fours and pees. Sometimes he lifts his leg, but not often. He's 2 yrs. old.

20 months old and still squatting. I always thought it's because we don't have anything for him to lift his leg on. We don't have any trees or shrubbery in the backyard.

Ramos does both now, guess he's having a sexual identity crisis. Actually he started lifting his leg, occassionally, at 8 months old. He is now 9 mo old and squats 1/2 of the time and lifts his leg the other 1/2 of the time.
