Caddy's rescue

Caddy came to live with us a week ago today. I was approached at my school's sports carnival by a breeder who I got one of my other boxers from, she asked if I would be interested in one of her older dogs as she was downsizing. I asked her what she was doing with the others and she told me she was putting her two oldest dogs down and in the same sentence mentioned Caddy saying that she was stubborn and wouldn't do anything as well as being a barker, which led me to believe that she was also going to put her down.
After school finished and I had ummed and aahed my husband will kill me that sort of thing I went to the breeder's place. Finally I decided that I would take Caddy as the older dog had a good chance of being rehomed as she is a trained show dog and caddy had only been off the breeder's property once as well as spending most of her time in a kennel ( the breeder didn't really like her mouth but loved everything else about her).
Over the past week I have been training Caddy to walk on a lead (the breeder told me she jumped around like an idiot-which she has not done once), teaching her how to climb stairs, and socialising her as I am a big believer in boxers being social animals. On Monday I took Caddy to the vet to make sure she was okay, we gave her a heart worm test and she came back strongly positive, as well as having a pulled muscle in her shoulder and an ear infection. I think the pulled muscle might have been caused playing with an older alpha dog at the breeder's place and the ear infection according to the vet was probably going to happen without her being rehoused. She has had other ear infections without them being properly treated according to my vet as the skin in her ears has thickened due to past infections. The heartworm is my major concern because Caddy is not yet two and for the next two years she has to be on Heartguard before she will be totally free of the parasite, but during that time she can drop dead at any time because of a blockage caused by the dead worms. To make matters even worse it appears that Caddy is scared of men I don't know why but my husband really scares her and he has not done a thing to her.
I really feel for this beautiful boxer who has a wonderful temperment and outlook on life and has yet to put a paw wrong. She just takes everything in her stride.
Hopefully my little shadow will pull through everything okay. The breeder requested that I put her in the Royal show in Darwin so we'll see how she goes. She is starting obedience and agility training soon but all training will be taken slowly as we need to build up her fitness. In the mean time Caddy is slowly adjusting to life in what my friends call boxer heaven and we'll just have to see how she goes.

appicon appicon appicon appicon Kudos to you for what you are doing! I am sure Caddy knows you saved her ;) I don't understand why this "breeder" would put down her dogs if there is nothing wrong with them but only because she doesn't want them anymore :( I really am astonished that a vet would go ahead and preform that knowing a good dog was being PTS for no reason  That is just awful and those poor dogs deserve a better life. Keep us posted on her progress :)

Congrats on your new baby. You are so wonderful to take her in. I'm sorry to hear about the heartworms and I hope she gets better soon. I'm sure that all the love you're providing will help her along.

Hi All,
Thought I'd let you know how Caddy has progressed. Her ear infection has cleared up and her shoulder is better. She has just been on a holiday with us at the beach and not one dog did the wrong thing. People complimented all three dogs on their great behaviour-a few wanted to take Caddy home because she is such a smooch.
Caddy has settled in really well-still not sure of my husband but that will come. She had her first obedience class and the instructor said she was the star of the class! She is such a good girl I have yet to growl at her for doing the wrong thing-my father says its because she knows that if she was really naughty she would have had to stay in jail as he puts it.

Thanks for your support

Congrates on your new addition to the family. I think dogs know when they have been saved :) She is already getting more attention and care in just a week with you than she probably had her first 2 years on earth. Glad to hear she is coming along great. Is the vet treating her for the heartworms or just putting her on heartgard? With the proper treatment, they usaually do really well with no complications. Keep us posted on her progress :D

Update on Caddy

:D Well its December. Caddy had her second heartworm test and just tested positive. The vet and I are rapt!!!!!!!!!!
I have now changed Caddy's name to Katie as I think she needs a new name for the new start she has been given. Katie has developed into a mischievious and protective dog. She even has points towards her Australian title and next year she will be competing in the Obedience ring to gain her companion dog title. If everything goes according to plan with the heartworm she may even be competing in agility and jumping dog along with my other boxers before 2003 is out.

Update on Katie

Katie has come a long way since we rescued her last year. She now loves my husband to death. In her eyes she owns him, no sooner does he speak than she is on his lap. You wouldn't believe the turn around in her behaviour- she is learning to play with toys although she doesn't like to share.
After this huge turnaround I know that we wouldn't think twice to take another rescue.

I'm happy for her that you rescued her and put so much effort into getting her well. What sort of "breeder" leaves their dogs to get heartworm, untreated ear infections and kills their older dogs because they just don't want them anymore. Then wants you to SHOW HER. I'd like to smack someone like that upside the head.
I'm sure she's loving life and I'm glad she has come so far for you and is doing so well.
