By the way...what is "flashy"??

Flash is the white markings on a boxer's fur. I think the "standard" is no more than 1/3 of the coat can be flash, the rest either brindle or fawn. So, the white around the neck, white socks, etc. are what makes a boxer "flashy."

Hope that helps.

I'm not sure what others think, but I think there has to be enough flash to be really noticed against the dark background.

Trixie has a white flash around her nose going up between her eyes, four white boots, a small white fleck on the back of her head, and a white belly that comes up around her neck like a natural collar. She's definitely flashy.

I kind of think of flashy as boxers dressing up for their Oscar nominations. I can just see Joan Rivers asking one, "So where did you get the flash?!"

Hi Type A......

I had the same question, and tound out that Joey is definately flashy, I had always thought that all boxers had white on them........probably because most of the pictuires you see are of flashy boxers. I'm still not clear on why the cost is different between flashy and non-flashy boxers......anyone out there know why?

The cost difference is not actually between flashy and non-flashy (or, it shouldn't be!). The difference is between show (potential) quality and pet quality. It's just that, sadly, non-flashy Boxers are often deemed pet quality (even if they are the best conformationally of the litter). Non-breeder judges still don't "get it" that white markings are an *enhancement* and not a *requirement*. The ABC has sent letters to judges on this matter, judges' seminars are addressing the issue, so hopefully they'll start giving the plain Boxers their due. (The task then, of course, is to get more of them in the show ring!).

I've never known much about showing dogs, and was never really interested in that, but I do think the AKC can be arbitrary at times. Years ago I had a friend who bought a mini Schnauzer, both parents were champs, but because he refused to crop the ears, he couldn't get her shown, I've heard that cropped ears are no longer a requirement, thank God, so maybe they will eventually change the way they look at colors rather than confirmation.....

how much flash

Dear Type A,

I asked this same question a couple months ago, and got some great answers. I'll try to find the thread and post the link for you.

The result of my thread was that my pup Riley is what would be called a plain brindle boxer. He has white on his toes and a white patch on his chest, and a small white stripe up the bridge of his nose. But no white mask or "socks" so he's not flashy.

Someone had mentioned that the white on the chest is called "blaze" and the white on the face and head is called "flash" but I don't know if that's the case.

Before we got our boxer I thought of the breed as always having those white markings on the face and white "socks" but when we saw Riley we fell in love with his perfect, expressive little face and consider him ANYTHING but "plain". Someone here on the boards used the term "classic", which I think is a little nicer. :)
