Hi ... I am new at this too, but I found that the boxer rescue in my area is very reasonable, compared to a breeder.

And I will have the good feeling of "saving" an animal, that might not otherwise have gotten a chance in life.

Good luck:cool:

I think you should have your cousin do more research on dogs before he goes out and gets a "cheap" one. Raising dogs is expensive. Premium kibble can run as much as $40 per bag and a boxer can go through a bag or more per month. In the first year there are lots and lots of trips to the vet for vaccinations (approx. $150 per round x 3 rounds), spaying/neutering (appx. $200), bedding, toys, grooming supplies, crate, leashes and collars, etc., etc., etc.

I would estimate that in the first year of owning Maggie (I got her at 8 weeks) I spent well OVER $1,500 on all of this plus more. Trips to the vet for anitbiotics when she got sick, infections and things that all pups get which need treatment, etc.

A "cheap" pup will not lessen any of these expenses. Unless your cousin is prepared to spend this kind of money raising a dog and giving it the proper care and maintenance, I would suggest to him/her that they wait until they can better afford such an expense. It isn't fair to the dog if you are not prepared for all that is involved in raising one.

Dan-I totally agree with you..I wish I would have kept a $$$log to see how much money I spent on my pups...Jazz went to the Emergency vet 3 times this year. and to walk in the door it is $65.00 and if it's passed midnight it's $90.00....
They CAN be very expensive!!!!

I'm Agreeing with Tulsa Dan on this one. Boxers are expensive...ANY dog is pretty expensive to be cared for properly. Puppy vacs and food ran me about $2000...that's counting the flea medicines and heartgaurd and all that other great stuff that dogs have to be on. For my 2...I go through about $100 worth of dog food alone in one month. Medicines, (heartgaurd, frontline, vitamins..etc) to insure the health for ONE dog is around $150 a month. Bone, toys, treats etc..which your dog will NEED if you still want a couch will be around $100 a month. You will more than likely need a crate for your dog (because you want to save your furnature) A "cheap" crate for a boxer sized dog will be about $100. And then there are all the extras that come along later....like vet bills, if your dog were to get sick. My pup had her dew claws removed because they were infected...$100...she developed demodex mange at 5 months...$200-$400 a month...stuff like that will cost you. SOOOOO when you get even a "cheap dog" you are really could really buy a small vehicle :p

"CHEAP" what's that? Our puppy cost us so much money when we got him and he is still have a lot of vet visits! He hurt his paw at the park and we are trying to figure out the problem. He had to get an X-ray, there's $60 just for that. We have started calling him the 6million dollar dog. Plus with the way he goes through toys and bones! Those Nylabones "made for strong chewers" what a joke. Rocky tears his up in about two days. Then we have to get more because he loves them. They are not cheap at all!

Cheap and dogs do not go together

Did I mention that we have spent $2,000.00 on our boxer puppy in the first year of her life???

Vet bills are VERY expensive, as is training, food, toys so they don't tear up your house... The list goes on...

BTW - She is pet quality, NOT a show dog.

Clarice is 4.5 months old and I am up to at least $1500. I recently applied for pet insurance because she will never be a "cheap" dog. No such thing! If you don't have the money to buy one, you probably don't have the money for vet bills which are MUCH more than the cost of the dog. Please tell you cousin to consider the long term costs of owning a dog.

If I had a nickle for every dollar I spent on my dogs I'd be able to retire:LOL:

But seriously. The other replies to your post are very accurate in saying it costs alot to raise a puppy correctly. I would suggest contacting a rescue organization and paying them a visit. They will probably tell them that some of the dogs they see are surrendered because the owner couldn't afford to keep the dog. One trip to the vet can devastate the pocket book for someone just getting by from month to month. At the very least they need to talk to someone about what a boxer requires. They should call a vet's office and inquire what yearly vaccinations and other preventatives will run, add to that about 40 bucks a month for food(for an adult dog) plus about another 10 for assorted treats and chewies.
Then take this total and divide it by 12 months. I'm betting it's close to 80-100 bucks per month.
Provided there is no unscheduled trips to the vet.
Of course it's going to be more if they get a puppy under a year than an adult dog.

Another point to remember, if the pup is really cheap, chances are the parents were never tested for the diseases and conditions which can occur in boxers. This being the case, the pup they select could be a time bomb waiting to go off $$$$.

Good luck and best wishes.
