Bumps My female boxer Brandy is 5 months old, she has been getting bumps on her back and on her back legs, she never gets them on her belly. I took her to the vets the first time this happened and he said it looked like hives and to give her benadryl. I gave her 1 pil she weighs 28 pounds. I don't see any flea's on her. So I'm not sure what is causing them. and she has had the bumps off and on for 3 weeks is this normal? Is anybody else's boxer get bumps?

Abigail has had the same type problem.. she was swollen from head to toe with bumps... we gave her childrens benadryl and within 30 minutes the swelling and bumps had gone down .. you almost could not see any at all.. her eyes were even swollen... we had been camping and she must have gotten bitten by something ... it was really scary being out in the middle of no where and not knowing what to do... benadryl was all we had thank God it worked.. I carry it with us now on all of our camping trips

Ginger is 13 months, about 55 lbs. The vet said to give her 50mgs. I just wrap 2 over the counter 25mgs capsules in pieces of cheese and she takes it fine and it works. Ig uess if it doesn't work for you I would call the vet again....

I had the same problem with my furbaby Dakoda. Off to the vet we went, and the vet said just to give her Benadryl. I did and the bumps were still there as the night went on they progressively started getting more and much larger, off to the vet we went again, they gave her a steroid shot and a bendaryl shot, with in seconds the bumps were gone. then about a week later the same thing. I switched vets and went for allergy testing. Needless to say my furbaby is allergic to alot of things. So now here I am with allergy shot 3x a week, and it is helping..You should talk to your vet about this..Hope this helps you a bit.

It sounds like hives. The severity and persistance of hives will vary from dog to dog, and what caused them.

It is important to be aware that a reaction which causes hives can become life threatening. Hives are an external swelling, the same thing can be happening internally, and it is possible for the swelling to close the airway, causing suffocation.

I'd speak to my vet. There are stronger medicines which may be necessary to get hives under control. Rocky used to have severe reactions to ground mold in the late summer and early fall. It was a contact allergen, and affected the tissues between his toes, and on the inside of his ears.

Benedry worked fine to control "average" reactions, but the vet gave us prednisone (I think) for the times that the benedryl just didn't cut it.

He'd take a series of a few prednisone, then a maintenance dosage of benedryl gave him relief.

There is another weapon you might want to consider having on hand. Ask your vet about an epi-pen. These have saved many pets lives who were having severe reactions.

If your dog is having hives, examine its lips and gums. They should be pink. If an animal isn't getting sufficient oxygen, they will lose their pink color. An epi-pen will counteract the reaction much quicker than an oral dose of benedryl or something stronger like prednisone.

While life threatening reactions may not be common, if you have a dog who is sensitive to various allergens, it is wise to be prepared. Your vet is in the best position to evaluate your pup. They can provide you with the appropriate meds, and instruct you on how and when to use them.

This could also be caused by a food allergy, as is Farley's case. You might want to try an elimination diet and find the root source of your problem, as an allergen test would do, so you don't have to medicate Brandy's symptoms for the rest of her life and never really get rid of the problem.

Murph had them once. The vet told me he had to have gotten stung, gave Benadryl and he was fine. Years ago I had a Boxer that was allergic to something in the woods because everytime we went he would breakout so I got to where I took the Benadryl and gave it to him before we got there and during our stay and he did great.

I have a vet appointment Sat. Morning, I have cut out Chicken and Beef products and going with just Lamb and rice. Also has any one heard of getting hives from Fly bites? I have seen a couple on her and was woundering if they can cause hives. Thanks for all the feed back. Also does anyone know how long it takes for your pics to get approved and added to the gallery?
