I would avoid the sterilized bones (they are cooked - and yes, those can splinter). Get raw ones from your butcher. Raw bones won't splinter, or at least not until they are very very old and dried out. QUOTE]

Anyone know if there is a specific kind of bone to get from the butcher or can it be anything raw? Just want to make sure we're getting the right thing...thanks!

Yeah its called a soup bone. In our grocery store they package them up by 4-5 bones in each bag. They are dirt cheap and will keep your dog glued for 1-2 hours or more. The only thing that I don't care for is that sometimes the bones are a little bloody  Cassius definately HAS to chew on it outside. And he gets a rinse of the old forearms before he can come back in to join civilization. It seems a bit caveman-ish, but that is what dogs of the past did.

I get raw femurs (cut into about 7"- 8" pieces) for Beasley at a local butcher shop. This butcher is an obvious favorite of many dog owners - he's got the bones sized appropriately for your breed!
