bulldog and pitbull?

Roxy...and yes, I'm posting again...I forgot to add, I had a similar experience in our PetSmart. A little girl, about 6 years old, saw Samson and said, "Mommy can I pet that doggie?" I was delighted and started to tell them that Samson loves children. The mother got a harsh look on her face, snarled, and said, "No you may not, THAT dog wants to pet you!!!!!" I ignored her, with dignity.

I suppose our babies do look fierce, especially with the big jowls, and with cropped ears it doesn't help either, but WE know they are good babies and need to just explain and explain and hopefully educate. And if we cannot explain, then aren't these boxer's the best kept secret! Yep!

My theory as to why people mistake Boxers for Pitbulls is this - in their head they know that "Pitbulls" have powerful jaws that cause a lot of damage, in fact, they've been told that Pitbull jaws actually "lock" when they are biting (untrue) so to these people, the main feature of a "Pitbull" is of course - the dog is going to have a REALLY BIG, threatening mouth. So along come our sweet Boxer babies with their bocephus Boxer heads, short noses and big flews and big mouths, and voila - the ignorant say, "Ohmigosh, that must be a "Pitbull!" I think it's also confusing that there are several breeds to which the "Pitbull" appellation can be applied.

Anyone who has worked with the public for any amount of time is not surprised at the amount of ignorance out there.

I got the bulldog thing this weekend. My husband and I are both teachers, he works the football games on the weekends. I took Oskar to get him used to loud cheers, pople etc. Everyone loved him and he was so good. On the way out we got "hey look it's a bulldog just like the mascot!" Aren't bulldogs short and squatty???? I just smiled and kept walking with Oskar who had his proud-head-in-the-air trot. I love that trot! :D

I was standing in line a the vet when a man in front of me pulled his dog and cat (in a cage) away from my baby pit Mya. He said, "one of those dogs killed my cat". I was so mad! I know that my lab will kill a cat if it is in his yard. I wanted to tell the guy off right then and there, but kept my mouth shut and told him that Mya won't hurt his dog or his cat (in the cage).

BTW, I took both Mickey and Mya to PetsMart (on a co-lead) and they did pretty good. Mya is still a bit skittish in public, and she had to go into the cart for a bit, but she jumped out when she felt comfortable and they were both angels for the rest of the trip.
