Im a little worried about my Emma. She recently fell back after a huge collision with Kona up in the air. I know she landed on her butt but am worried she landed on her tail wrong. The end is swollen and she screams when you touch it. This happen yesterday and she seems fine as long as you don't touch it. Part of me wants to take her to the vet to see if it's broke and part of me says give it some time and let it heal. I really don't like to over react to every little thing, but I don't like to see her in any pain either. Any suggestions????:(

Broken tail

If it is swollen and painful I would suggest a trip to the vet. At the very least a phone consult. They can suggest whether over the counter asprin could be used to treat the swelling and pain to make her more comfortable or whether the vet feels that an in person exam is needed first. Piece of mind is everything in my opinion. A fractured tail is slow to heal because it cannot adequetly be imobilized. I've had my whippet break and dislocate her tail, took weeks to go back to normal.

I'd also recommend you see a vet.

Our boxer/lab mix sprained her tail (in her crate somehow) last fall. She wouldn't wag it or sit on it and she wouldn't let you touch it, but she didn't bark in pain or anthing.

So if Emma is crying in pain, I'd definitely see a vet to get some kind of painkillers for her!

Hope she feels better soon!

I would agree and say take her just to get that piece of mind. Vets are used to people coming in for the "maybe something is wrong" If she is hurting, it can't hurt to go!

UPDATE: I just talked to the vet and she says to go ahead and bring her in to be checked. Not that she could do much for a broken or sprained tail, but they can rule out the chance that there is an infection. So, on that note, I will let you all know what I find out. Thanks for your support.

HaHaHa.........I know exactly what you're talking about.......and I thought the exact same thing........broken tail!

My boxer/greyhound mix had the same problem, and yes I brought her to the vet asking if she broke her tail.

She only sprained/strained her leg/butt muscles from chasing the ball too long.....I mean like a couple of hours. When she was younger, that is ALL she would do outside, bring her soccer ball to you so you'd kick/throw it, go get it and bring it back for more.........over and over and over..........had to take the ball and put it away to get her to stop. She's truly obsessed with it.

She wouldn't sit down, yelped when she tried to lay down, didn't want to be touched back there at all..........I really thought she had broke her tail!

Vet gave her some anti-inflamatories and she was better in a couple of days.

Even though she's 12 yrs old now, that soccer ball is still her life....she just can't play as long nor run as fast (and being part greyhound, let me tell you she was FAST). But she still has to play fetch with it every single day.

Good luck, I'm sure your baby will be just fine after a visit to the vet.

OK...WE'RE BACK FROM THE VET!!!

It's official..she has a broken/dislocated tail. The second vertibrae out is dislocated and possibly fractured. Poor little girl:(
She got the vet's finger up her butt  too to be sure there were no fragments that could interupt her pooping or cause other problems. Her sphincter seem to be working just fine. I don't know which was worse for her, the broken tail or the finger in the butt  She whined a little at the squeezing of her tail, but got real shaky when the finger when up the butt!! HAHA!! Poor Emma! Anyway, since it's not causing any physical problems the only reason to fix it would be cosmetic. Honestly, I can't even tell. I couldn't see putting her through all the anesthesia and trauma of resetting it. She said it would probably take about 6 weeks to heel. Thanks for everyone's support!

I'm glad you found out what was wrong!

Poor Emma! Having a finger up her butt! And I feel sorry for her vet too (but at least he gets paid for it!)

Glad to hear Emma is okay. At least you have peace of mind now!! I would have never thought a little nub of a tail could be broken...I guess so.
