We are bringing home an 8 week old boxer in two days to a gorgeous fully trained & spoilt 2.5yr old boxer - Bosley.

Bosley sleeps in our room at night and is one of the family, however in the start we had rules like sleeping in laundry for first few weeks then outside in kennel for a while then slowly just letting him in to sleep on weekends once he was toilet trained.

But, with bringing home new puppie I think Bosley should go through all of that (sleeping outside etc) with Lollie (new boxer puppy) to keep her company and to lessen the chance of Lollie crying and seperation anxiety.

Is this unfair to Bosley? Should I have different rules in the beginning?

I would just crate the new kiddo until he is potty trained. Then give them close to the same rights that your Bosley gets. That is what we did with Austin. He still has to be crated during the day because of destruction issues, but they girls still have free roam of the house.

Why would you ever require a boxer puppy to live outside, at all, for any amount of time...? Away from their "pack" and not where you can supervise them? I can think of absolutely no sound reasoning behind that. If it is supposed to be a potty training tactic, it only delays it as the puppy doesn't have to control when and where it eliminates. But why on earth do you think this is a rite of passage you must inflict upon a new puppy?

Your puppy should not be put outside. In a crate in your bedroom would be the best place.

Completely Boxer Crazy
I would not change Bosleys sleeping habits etc, if anything I would give him special attention.
Boxers need to be kept inside, especially in winter.
When I first started reading about crates I was horrified, I thought it was cruel. It's just not something widely practiced here. Now i believe if i had a puppy I would definately use a crate. Obviously not on an adult dog who had never been crated.
When Garvin was a puppy first he was kept in the bathroom and then in the garage. One day he got his little leg caught in some cables and I hate to think what would have happened if I hadn't been home and he'd hung there for hours...
A crate then enables you to keep the puppy in your room at night, you don't have to worry about it getting into something it shouldn't. It also means the dog can only poo in there, so less mess. Because they are confined there, they will learn where to poo sooner than a dog who is outside.
It's too dangerous to leave a puppy outside all day, they can get into all sorts of trouble not to mention stolen.
When we got Garvin I knew nothing about dogs. I thought dogs live outside and are not too smart. So Garvin was in the garage for the first year he lived with us. When I look back now I feel sick about it. Dogs are happy with their pack, there is no advantage gained for anyone by 'toughening them up' and making them be alone. A dog will actually learn to be more confident and relaxed and less anxious the more time it spends with you.

I am wanting my new pup to be an inside and outside dog because I work during the day and dont want them alone in house, and it is not a potty training exercise I just feel dogs should be able to roam free outdoors in the beautiful aussie sunshine with fresh air and a big back yard.

I am unsettled you feel I impressed upon you that it was a 'rite of passage I must inflict upon a new puppy'. But I do respect your thoughts and thankyou for them.

Boxers are NOT outside dogs. Please get a cage for while you are at work. They can get into just as much trouble outside as they can inside, and outside someone could steal the baby. Dogs DO need outside time, with thier owners. So you can watch them and keep them safe.

Do you have a fenced in yard? Or what do you mean by "roam free".
I dont think anyone is trying to be mean to you about any of this. It is just everyone here has so much love for these babies and we only want the best for all them :)

Best of luck with your new addition :)
