The name Brett Favre and the state Wisconsin have had a love affair for years. Since Katrina has wiped out his family home, Brett has brought the hurricane to the midwest.
I feel so bad for all these people. I am sure I am not alone to feel relief when Brett's family was found safe and sound. Their home gone, but they were fine.
Now, Brett has two planes set to fly to Miss. and deliver food, chain saws and whatever else they need in Miss. to aid in the clean up. Brett's loyal fans can now do something for all the people that are so devestated. These planes will fly from Wisconsin to the area as many times as his fans can fill the plane with goods.
I know it helps that Brett has the money to do this, but he is just a good ole boy. He always is family first and he appears to be the guy you would want as a neighbor and friend. I am just proud to be a Packer fan. Even in the BAAAADDDDDDD years. I know with Brett at the helm of the Packers we will have a first rate team this year.

That is a great story. It is so nice to hear that some of those who have a lot, also give a lot. I've never been a big football fan, but I am surely a fan of Favre's now.

I am sorry that Brett Farve and his family lost their homes but they have money to rebuild. ALL that lost their homes are a tragedy.... but there are still thousands of people on rooftops who didn't have a car or the 50 dollars to fill their gas tanks in order to evacuate and are praying for relief.
New Orleans has a 30-40 percent poverty rate and many of the people stranded are there simply because THEY DID NOT HAVE THE MEANS TO EVAC!!! GOD BLESS THEM ALL

This is one of the reasons it is great that Brett Favre is sponsoring/paying for two planes to fly to the region repeatedly, as many times as necessary, to take supplies there. The fans donate supplies, and Brett apparently is paying for the planes themselves as well as the fuel, pilot/crew, etc. as many trips as needed. This is truly generous.

You are right, there are still people in urgent need - not even evacuated yet!! This is really hard to watch from afar and feel so helpless to do anything when people are sitting on their rooftops and I'm safe and sound, on the internet, in a clean/dry/warm home. I also think about the dogs and other pets that are stranded or that were lost to the storm.

I'm assuming the Red Cross can take donations as well as other similar organizations and it feels good to help that way too. What I like about Brett Favre's initiative is there is a really good feeling about buying supplies, having them loaded on a plane and knowing that plane may be unloaded in the affected area later TODAY, and the stuff I buy may reach a needy family today. It feels like a more immediate, tangible way to make a difference. Not that it's about me feeling good about helping, but gosh it does feel good to know I can donate stuff to help right away as well as to the Red Cross for the duration. (I may see about donating to a search/rescue K9 organization, too).

I think my point in writing about Brett Favre is to give an example of how wonderful this guy is. I was just writing about a human interest story.

You know what kills me though(as great as I think Brett is and all the others who are donating) - the media makes a BIG deal of talking about celebrity donations and support, but not about what the average person gives in this. Those of us with everyday salaries and limited income who give everything we can - it's like the parable of the woman who gives the only penny she's got. . .it's worth so much more than someone who gives millions and still has millions for themselves.

I'm not trying to say their donations aren't important and greatly appreciated, just that I hate how the media plays to them -like they're saints for donating 1% of their income when other people donate much more.

(down from soap box)

Aside, I think what Brett is doing is terrific. I just wish the media would also focus on what EVERYONE is doing.

AMEN to what Brett is doing, I agree it is terrific. I watched on the news lastnight as he talked about his family getting in the attic and my heart went out to him. Just the same as it has for all the people that have been affected.
I think that the media does focus on what everyone else is doing, they report it, but ofcourse everyone is going to listen and remember a name that they know. That is because of the pedastool that, we, Americans put our celebrities on. It's OUR own faults. Sure, if they said "mmichaelson" was sending planes I would think it was great and cool, but when you say Brett is, then WOW, what a great guy he is. I called my hubby into the room lastnight to see the Brett interview, there had been many other families on that were doing interviews also, but I only called him in for the Brett one. That's why the media does it, because of the way WE respond to it.
Anyway, have a great day everyone! :)

I Apologize For My Post

I tried to catch it in time after I read the rest of the posts but a few of you caught my post, I am sorry I did not have all the information when I posted and was still angry and sickened at the loss and destruction and was speaking out of pain.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I didn't take offense. I think the frustration was understood even though the facts behind it were off a bit.

New info on Favre, the local news here clarified that he isn't personally paying for the planes but using his clout to get the airline to contribute (he flies with them a LOT and asked them to do this, they of course agreed). In my mind this is still significant - it isn't something the average person could get an airline to do, so he's wielding his celebrity for the greater good. He is also donating supplies, etc., himself. Thus, he's contributing his wealth to help directly, and contributing his celebrity to influence others to join in the relief effort as well. Along the lines of what Ciscobxr says, the way WE respond to it is important, not only in the reasoning behind why the media hypes it up but I think someone like Brett Favre knows that if he sets the example and does something like this, he knows we'll respond to that and thus he can have an even greater impact.

In any case - he's a good all-around guy and I'm glad he's helping out.
