Braces?

My DH is getting braces next week at the age of 34. Better late than never, right? His mom never took care of him, and never took him to the dentist, so needless to say he never got braces when he needed them and is now going to finally do it! Is anyone here an adult with braces and any good advice for him?? Thanks!

My dh is 31 and will get his braces off in April (he hopes) after having them on for 2 years. His was pretty much the same situation you described for your dh. My husband's family was tight on money and couldn't afford to get the kids to the dentist. It was a costly decision however the benefits MUCH outway the drawbacks. He has so much more confidence now and will have a ton more when his braces are off and his teeth straight. Congrats on this decision, I know your dh will feel soooo much better with a nicer smile!

I had braces for three years...when I was in high school..I hopefully will get them again soon (I didn't wear my retainers). The only advice I could offer is....don't eat the things that they tell you not too (corn on the cob, apples off the core, ice) Don't bite your fingernails... and WEAR YOUR RETAINERS!

Oh and be careful not to get hit in the mouth...because it HURTS!

Good Luck. My daughter age 11 just had hers taken off and now has to wear upper and lower retainers..

Good for him! I wish I could get them for myself, but just took my son (11) to go get his last week...the sacifices we make! Take B-MAN'S MOMs advice and follow the drs orders on what not to eat! Caught my son eating milk duds and he broke a wire already!!

Had them when I was young, loved them and now I put them on people everyday. Our oldest person with them on is 59. They make such a huge difference in appearance and self-confidence it's amazing.

We have lots of adults in braces at my practice. Lots of parents did not have the money or insurance to get them while they were younger. They are much easier than they were years ago!
~Saltwater rinses help with sore gums alot!
~Take whatever pain med (over the counter) you take for a headache before adjustment visits to alleviate pain
~Soft diet (not liquid ) after adjustments
~ Get regular cleanings & have an extra toothbrush to take with you (food can easily get caught in the archwire)
