I have two dogs. Ms. Ali and our little poodle Bailey. Bailey was here first and Ms. Ali was supposed to be here for a few nights .... that was almost four years ago and I wouldn't have it any other way. Dogs learn from each other and are great company for each other. Ms. Ali has a couple of boxers friends that she can roughhouse with so she isn't too rough with Bailey. As well they love each other dearly and the best part is we get to love them even more. :)

I would defiently recommend going with a rescue group. I am proud to be a first time foster mom. My foster dog was planned to be put down three days before xmas because the family could'nt pay the medical bills for an injured leg. The dog is perfect ( house trained, kennel trained) all in all a joy to be around. When I think of what her future could have been it breaks my heart. The more people that help foster or adopt from approved rescue agency's the more dogs we can help or save. I hope you do consider it...

What age do you guys recommend getting a second boxer? Ever since I got my girl, Layla, I've wanted a second. She's ten months (next week), but I have a serious itch to have two. Just like the OP, I have the room and I understand the financial committment. I was thinking about waiting until the Summer or Fall and getting another one. Also is it okay to go back to my breeder and get another from them? Or should I go with completely different bloodlines? I have been around dogs my entire life and met countless breeders, and my breeder by far is the best that I've ever had the pleasure in dealing with. Thanks!

Cleo's Mom

Super Boxer
We had Cleo for a year before getting her brother. Some here can remember all the questions I had about getting a 2nd. We were so lucky with Cleo. My husband was afraid she would become detached from us if we got a 2nd. Would she start having accidents in the house if we got a puppy? Would she be jealous? How will I walk 2 by myself. Cleo actually became a better adult dog(She took over as role model.) They are the best of friends. We have never regretted getting Cairo. They are both lovebugs!!! Now we laugh and we say we each have a boxer lap dog. We will never have just 1 dog. They are happier together. Now I worry about if something happens to one of them what will the other do? If 1 has to go to the vet they both have to go because it is too traumatic to stay at home by themself.

When we decided to get dogs, we always were looking for two. As both my husband and I work, we wanted two to keep each other company during the day. We have never regretted the decision (well, the bills are a bit higher :)). They are so much fun to watch play together. They do learn from each other (and get into trouble together). It is so amazine to see their different personalities. Plus, we each get one to snuggle with. :)

Just wanted to add a note about rescue digs.
My Diesel came from a rescue 5 years ago and he is such a blessing in my life, and I love knowing that I saved a dog from a dire fate. In fact, most of my animals, horses and dogs, have been rescue. I will always rescue animals.
However, if this is your first one, you should consider the fact that when you rescue a dog, you are probably rescuing one that came from a byb, which means that most likely the parents were not screened for any health problems... which is a problem we're facing now as we just found out Diesel had cardiomyopathy.
Of course, it doesn't change anything--I love him and I would do it all over again. He is seriously the joy of my life. Diesel is the purest-hearted creature I've ever met. All he wants is love and cookies, and that's what we've given him for 5 short years. But before you rescue a dog, be prepared to deal with unforeseen problems... I know it can happen to any breed, any boxer, any species, but with a rescue there's a greater chance, and it sucks so much.
Sorry to be so long winded, but this is something we've only learned in the past few days, and I'm still trying to come to terms with it... which I do by blaming bybs. Diesel is definitely not the "boxer standard," but he is my best friend. I would encourage you to rescue your boxer, because they are so special and deserve so much love, and you're doing such a good thing when you rescue... but be aware of the pain it can cost you later.
But personally, I would do it all over again, a hundred times.
Oh, and two boxers are even funner that one!

We have two Boxers. They're hilarious. I really debated about adding a second Boxer as well. We had an elderly Chow when we got our first Boxer, Kronk, as a puppy. After the Chow died, we just had Kronk for a while. After a while I started feeling bad for him. He is the extreme when it comes to playful and even with two kids in the house, he wasn't getting as much play time as he deserved. When he was two, we adopted Kuzco from a Boxer Rescue. (Kronk and Kuzco from Emperor's New Groove!). Anyways, it's been great having a play mate for Kronk. They do wear each other out, which is great, but they also both get play time and walks with their humans. We just don't have to feel so bad if they miss some of that for a day because they have each other. I also feel better knowing they have each other when we're out of town. They stay at a pet hotel in the same dog run.

Just be prepared for loud play time. We have taught ours to settle down when we say "Hush!". I try to let them how their play, but sometimes you just can't think! Or hear the TV or talk on the phone. They don't play like that all the time, though.

It's amazing how different they are. Don't expect your new baby to be just like the one you have. Kronk is extra hyper. Kuzco is not. Kronk is fascinated with food. Kuzco is not. They are both silly, but Kronk is sillier. I can hardly just sit and pet Kronk without him wiggling and jumping on me and licking me, but I can snuggle with Kuzco and enjoy petting him. So, I guess you can say I have the best of both Boxer worlds!

Good luck with your new one! I recommend rescuing if you can. If you do, take your current Boxer with you to see which one he/she gets along with the best. A lot of people think males should be with females, but we have two males and they are great together.

I just added a second boxer. Atlas is almost 7 yrs old so he gets a little grumpy with her at times but on the other hand he really likes playing with her. We are dealing with the potty training right now and she is doing really well. We love watching them play. I have to tell you they really play hard at times and it scares me because Sydney is still a puppy but she can hold her own. Poor Atlas has some battle wounds. I say go for it.

MKAD - wonderful news on your new addition, very exciting!!

Your thread has been great reading. We lost our 18 month old flashy fawn boy suddenly on Christmas Day and have been considering the option of going for two but after having had only one to spoil just weren't quite sure...

The breeders have offered us his sister from the same litter after she has her first pups and we would love to hear everyone's thoughts on whether or not we should bring her home with a puppy or wait a while? She will be 2 years old.

It probably won't be for at least another 5 months but will hopefully be well worth the wait!
