At about 6 months of age Gage started showing signs of being protective of us and our home. Nothing aggressive just a hilarious howl followed by some barking and growling. I've never heard a boxer howl until I got him. Now that we have Teagan too, they notice every little change in the house, our yard, even our neighbors yard. Yesterday they were freaked out by the sears truck in the neighbors yard is was so funny. As soon as people approach usually Gage starts wagging his little nub but Teagan will have nothing to do with people on our property until we tell her it's ok. She's hilarious too she kicks up dirt and gravel with her back legs. My husband leaves around 4am to go to work and I feel very safe knowing any little sound they hear they'll surely let me know about it. They go crazy barking then come scratch on my door until I check it out and tell them it's ok. They wouldn't hurt a soul but they sure sound like they would! They're the best alarm system I've ever purchased. Also watched a special on 60 minutes about an expert robber who finally got caught. They were interviewing him asking ways to avoid being victim of a robbery and over alarms, dead bolts and all he said if he heard a dog bark he found another place to break into. Isn't that neat.

My Boxer is Protective

For the first year I didn't see even a glimsp of Daisy's protective nature but she has since grown into it.
She use to jump and run away at loud noises (such as a pan falling onto the kitchen floor), now she'll actually run into the kitchen to make sure everything is OK if one was to drop a pan.
She will still greet most people with her wiggle butt but you can tell she is more reserved with strangers... I was working in my yard after dark a few days ago when Daisy spotted someone on the Road behind me... there was something about him she didn't like and she immediately rushed past me and took up a position between and this stranger ( with that low growl and couple of "I'm watching you" barks).
The man yelled and turned back down the road; Daisy walked back to me quite proud of herself.

I didn't see anyone post it in this topic but I thought I read somewhere that boxers were used in the military a long time ago. I will have to see if I can find that website and update my post.

Edit: This is from the Boxer FAQ section of the main site on here.

The boxer is a German breed, developed in the late 1800s from mastiff-type dogs known as bullenbeisers (bull-baiters). The brabant bullenbeiser is generally accepted as being the most immediate ancestor of the boxer. These dogs were selectively bred for hunting and holding prey – and the independent thinking ability required for that task remains a feature of the breed today.

Brutus is not the least bit protective. He's more interested in playing with who or whatever is out there or comes in the house. Last weekend was the first time that he even barked when someone rang the doorbell. I've been hoping that he would eventually become a little more protective of his family. Maybe our new little girl will be.

Well Put

As Dancat Posted. They Were Used In Germany, Also As Police, Guard Dogs, And By The Military. At The Time German Service Standards Called For A Darker Colored Dog Was A Requirement. (no Solid White). Don't Remember If I Read That Or If It Was From "boxers" Breed All About It. I Know It's In The Breed, I've Seen It, My Brothers Female Used To Not Let Me In The House(rescued Girl), And She Has Done The Same To Him When He's Came Home From Work Trips. Reguardless. I Feel Diesel Would Do Whatever To Protect His Family, But That's Not His Purpose In The House, Nor Was Even In My Mind When I Got Him.

Our Maggie didn't even bark for the first time until she was 5 months old. Now she puts on a really good show when our Rottie (great protection/companion dog for our family living in a rural setting) senses something out of the ordinary. It's really funny because the rottie Emily will snort, that sets Maggie off as if she's goint to tear something up... Her bark makes her sound as if she's 100 pounds, in reality all 41 pounds of her would probably run like heck if someone tried to get in the house =)

Zeke (3yo) is protective of my fiancee and other women more so than me. I think he knows that I am the "alpha", but doesn't seem too sure about my friend that he occasionally runs with or about my fiancee. They both tell me that he will sometimes growl and bark at people, especially at night... they don't seem to mind, since it is fairly rare. I have only heard him growl three times, and boy, when he growls, I listen. In fact, the hair raises on the back of MY neck when he growls, because I know he senses something.
Since he rarely barks, it sometimes startles me when he does. We were watching some scary movie one night with about 8 people over, and during a tense scene, Zeke barked for some unknown reason, and I think about 6 of us screamed at the top of our lungs. It was so loud, I was afraid I would have to explain to the neighbors that we weren't being attacked!
Otherwise, I honestly think Zeke would give a slight butt wiggle to anybody entering our house, and even more so if they had the common sense to use a little baby talk or food. My grandpa's Weim was a guard dog, but someone tricked him into going into a closet with a full bag of food. They made off with the bowling alley's money, and my grandpa got a VERY full dog! Zeke would do the same for half a hot dog!

Jake doesn't know a stranger. If someone new comes thru our door he hasn't met his little nub starts wagging and he's jumping and excited. Its funny. He'd probably help and intruder carry stuff out of the house before he'd attack them.
