My girlfriend and I have talked about moving in together in the next few months. She is not a dog lover at all! In fact she has already said that Tyson will not be allowed in the main part of the house....only in the basement. My question is, how fit are Boxers to deal with outside temperatures if I was to buy/build a doghouse??? I'm not saying I would leave him out there 24 hours a day but I would feel bad with him couped up in a tiny basement all day long. It's bad enough that I'm at work all day.

Putting your dog outside is not a very good idea. And boxers are such people-dogs I cant see one being very happy trapped in a basement (or a doghouse) all day. I know my dog likes to follow me wherever I go throughout the house. They tend to get depressed all alone.

What are the chances of you putting your foot down and changing her mind?

My husband was NOT at all a dog person, but I put my foot down and showed up with a dog. I trained him not to jump on any of the furniture.... and my husband got used to it. I also agreed to vacumn every day.

When we move we plan on having a "formal sitting room" and then a den/living room that we use most frequently. Deuce will not be allowed in the formal sitting room.... but that will just be for compnay anyhow. Just another idea.

When we first moved into the house we are in now, we had to keep deuce in the basement for just a day while the movers walked in and out.... and let me tell you ... IT WAS HELL! Deuce yipped and yapped and scratched at the door, because he wanted to be with us. It will be much easier for you if you find a way to let him go through most of the house w/ you!

Boxers don't stand the cold for too long. My boyfriend and I moved in about 3 years ago. He did not want the dog at all! He was almost adamant about me giving him up, saying that it's a pain in the a** to find a place, why can't you just give him to your parents. I told him I wanted to keep him and that I felt safer having him around. Anyway, after we moved in together Oscar was only 1 at the time and was a total terror, he would get into the trash, eat both of our shoes, chewed on the walls of our rented house, and destroyed the backyard. I though BF was either gonna kill me or the dog. As time went on they got closer and closer and now I have to compete for attention from both of them because they love each other so much. I understand your girlfriend isn't a dog lover but neither was Mike, when I lost my lab to kidney failure and cried he told me "it's just a dog". I wish you the best of luck with your move and convincing your girlfriend to let the dog hang around. I hope she comes around. Best of luck!

My boyfriend always tells me that I love my animals more than him, so I may be a little prejudiced to answer your question! But, I can't see a boxer being happy living in the basement or outside all the time. Riley is my constant shadow...she wakes up from a dead sleep if I move a muscle and is right by my side. If I am on the couch she is on my, when I shower she is right outside the door, etc. I think you'll find that the general consensus here at BW is that boxers are such an emotionally attached breed. I would think that your dog would be very unhappy if he/she couldn't be with during the times you're not at work (unless, you spend alot of time in the basement). JMO

Good Luck!

Yes I will be in the basement from the time i get home from work till the time i go to bed....and i may even sleep down there occasionally...LOL. Anytime we talk about it just ends up in an argument. I'm hoping with time she'll break down, or else it's gonna become a pretty divided household.

I'm with everyone else here. It is hard to live with a boxer and not become a dog person. ;) I myself wasn't a dog person until I inherited my Chunky Paws (Maude). Now people think I am a boxer nut. foolicon

Star needs to be a part of our life and I know she would not be happy living in a basement away from us :( with me its a case of love me love my dog. Im sure she can be converted to a boxer lover.

A boxer is not "really" a dog-they are more human that the other breeds and don't do well alone. Especially stuck in a basement all day.

you don't like my dog equals to don't like ME....

Sorry in advance if I hurt feelings or I'm rude, but I really don't understand how to have a relationship with someone that do NOT LOVE my dogs.

I refused to get in more deep contact with ANYONE that does not LIKE animals, specially MY animals. And I lost some "good" bf as because of that. Very nice, pleasant guys that I liked very much, but, it came up the topic animals, didn't sparkle, sorry...I cannot make it.

I know it's me. I'm picky!! But really happy with my chosen husband who "adores" my boxer as he loves me (if not much= and I'm not complaining!!)

I agree with the sentiments of everyone else. It would be absolute torture for your boxer to be alone. They are way to social for that kind of treatment. Riggo follows me around room to room when I'm home and is happy to see everyone who's invited in.
