I agree the leash will help you control your dog... When we brought home Lady she was a stray and was quick to jump on our cat, so one day I put her on the leash while the cat was in the same room with us and everytime Lady would yank to get the cat I would tell her "NO" and have her sit... after so many times and days of doing this, she got the idea we didn't want her chasing the cat.... YOU have to put time in and be persistant, everytime your dog yanks to run after the cat no matter if it's a couple days or not, tell him a command so he knows it's not accepted, by you... They want nothing more then to please you...

best of luck to you, be patient and take a deep breathe, it will get better if you snip the problem in the butt... they should be able to live together peacefully...

keep us updated...

ok not sure if this is a good behavior or not we have 2 cats aswell as rocko one is atleast 7yrs old the other close to 1 rocko loves playing with the younger one he is an outside cat and the cat seems to like playing too cause he seems to egg him on he will sit in the chair and bat at rocko's nose to get his attention I am just worried that rocko might get to rough with him and hurt him they chase each other all the time is this ok or should I worry and try and keep them apart

Lately, when I return from work, my Monte (my 18mo. boxer) is sleeping next to his dog bed in the family room because Bageerah (my 2yr. old cat) is sleeping on the bed. I think the cat has established his dominance. hehe... They also sleep next to each other when we go to bed at night on their own pillows. It really can work, though I know this may be a rarity.

we have three boxers and a cat...all living harmoneously under one roof. so yes....it is possible. from the get-go...all dogs in our household are taught "no cat".
i whole heartedly agree with putting a leash on your dog. yes...you may feel like you don't need it to be on her all the time but if you don't leave a leash on her you will not be able to stop her from chasing the cat when she decides to. without a leash you have no control over the situation...the dog does.
all three of our boxers wore a leash for the longest time when they were growing up. it just dragged behind them. we didn't hold it all the time. and, i don't know what i would have done with out it. it helps sooo sooo much. you're able to grab the leash at any given time and control any situation immediately. we also wear "bait pouches" ALL THE TIME. we have our bait pouches full of treats and goodies so when we stop a behavior that we don't like we're able to immediately ask them to sit and reward them with a treat...for doing something good (sitting)
give the leash a try. the dogs really don't mind dragging it around. we always used a 4 foot leather lead. it's 2 feet shorter than your average 6 foot leash but still gives you the control you need.

I agree with gmac...we have 4 cats from 11 down to 2 years old. Sophie loves them. She wanted to "see what they were about" but we would spend our together time in one room, allow the cats to enter if they wished, some sniffing with me contolling Sophie by the collar, and the are fine now. They even take naps together...sophie is nice and warm for the older ones! Sophie even got "boxed" by little Gizmo!

Millie has been interested in our 2 cats from day one. We stopped the chase game early on. Neither one of our cats is really skittish, so they all interact quite a bit. Magic is probably the least tolerant of Millie, I have even caught her instigating by swiping at Millie when she was just walking by! BUT I recently saw them together, actually cuddling on our bed. That was a FIRST. By the time I got my camera, they had moved :( Lily, our other cat, pretty much lets Millie do whatever she wants to her...they play, lick, paw...and then Lily will get tired of it and leave.

I think you can tell from this picture who is in charge...LOL!

They CAN be friends!

Adam just loves our cat Tessie. I posted a pick in my gallery.

Tessie came to us as an abandoned 3 week old kitty. (she's now 4 months) Since she was so so small, I would present her to the dogs numerous times a day. Telling the dogs, "be soft" and "leave it". Now, Tessie steals their food and makes the dogs wait for a drink of water!! Kitty is the Queen of the house! LOL

When the dogs were puppies, the leash was invaluable with the other cats.

I'm glad for this thread...it gives me hope again.

We introduced my dogs to my hubby's cat in a very bad way - I never considered Diesel might chase the cat, but he sure did, and it was a disaster. The poor cat was terrorized (but not hurt, he clawed Diesel up pretty bad though), and it's happened more since then. Now he's afraid of our other dog too, who's never even showed much interest in him, and she definitely doesn't try to chase him.

We've been keeping them separated at all times, I'm embarrassed to say we've all been living together for over three years and we still do this. We've tried starting the desensitizing practice and teaching Diesel to ignore the cat, and we seem to make progress, but then DH and I screw up and stop practicing. It's totally our faults, and I hate living this way. It's not fair to either of them that someone always has to be behind a closed door.

I'm currently pregnant with our first child and not looking forward to managing this once we bring the baby home. I just want them to get along. We should really start tether work again and stick with it this time and hope that our cat is able to relax and trust that we won't let him get hurt. Honestly, it may seem like overkill, but it does work, we have seen results if only we'd keep it up, and if you are consistent with the dog, he will learn the rules.

I have 3 cats plus our boxer Jackson. He use to chase two of the cats all the time, in time it got alot better now everyonce in awhile he decides to get crazy and chases them but we resuced alittle white kitty a few months back and Jackson (boxer) and Otis (the lil kitty) have such a bond together. Not sure why but he never chases this little one, always very gentle with him almost like he thinks its his job to take care of Otis.
