Boxers and Boston Terriers - Own Both??

I am looking for any insight, advice, etc. on owning a Boxer and a Boston. I have a 9 mo. old Boxer who is just the absolute best dog ever. Very affectionate, easy to train, . . . well you all know how great they are

I have found a Boston pup (female) that I am considering. I have heard that Boston's are very similar to Boxers in personality, etc. Anybody own both and can give me their first hand experience?

Also, I am concerned about introducing another puppy to the household. How will Odie take to her - jealously problems - acting up, etc.?? He has been such an easy dog I would hate to spoil it.

Any advice or insight would be most appreciated!!

I haven't had two at once, but I had a Boston and then after he passed away my next dog was a Boxer. VERY similar personalities. Boston's have a lot of character and really individual personalities, just like Boxer's. They are both really intelligent, fun breeds. My parents still have a Boston and he and my Boxer get along wonderfully - actually the Boston beats up on Buford all the time - the 70 lb. size difference doesn't seem to intimidate him at all!!

I don't own a Boston terrier (just a boxer) but our neighbors have a year-old boston terrier and a 5 year-old boxer. Their boxer is a strange beast, very skittish and afraid but, when he wants, very affectionate. I don't get the impression that he is very fond of Rico (the terrier) - too high energy. However, Rico spends lots of time in our yard (and house) and loves our adult boxer. He's been a bit agressive and likes to bite, and thus required some discipline as a pup. I think that is a trait of all terriers. He also has killed a few rabbits. Rico has definitely calmed down with age - but is still a handful. He is also a total escape artist - digging holes in order to sqeeze under the fence to get to bread another neighbor puts out for the birds.

I would guess your boxer, being young and presumably still very high energy, would be a good fit with a puppy - especially if he is a friendly sort, like our boxer. I haven't seen any jealousy issues with my dog, just possessiveness about toys. For example, Darwin pretty much ignores his toys until Rico picks one up. And treats, Rico wants them all! For the most part Darwin has been incredibly tolerant of Rico. A couple of times I've seen a little stare down over food. And when the biting on the jowls has gotten to be too much, Darwin has had to lay down the paw.

I would definitely introduce Odie to his prospective sister first to test the waters. Really, my biggest reservations would be over the temperment of the Boston terrier.

One of Punchie's best friends at the dog park was a Boston Terrier. They played great together.
I would still advise letting the two interact before any committments were made. You can never be sure how dogs will get along with each other.

Bostons are like a Boxer only smaller. They have a similar look and a similar personality. I have even seen our Abby doing "Boston" burns around the yard!

Our Boston girl was a awesome friend to our Boxer girl, Trixie (Boston) was 7 yrs older to our new Boxer girl but took her under her wing, she passed @ the age of 14, they make great companions for one another. My MIL has a male Boxer 3yrs. old and a female Boston 6 yrs. old they were great together, on a somber note, my inlaws left for a RV rally taking Roxie the Boston and leaving Baxter @ the vet in kennel...poor Roxie had a stroke Tues. on the way to the rally and they rushed her to the nearest vet but he could'nt save her my inlaws are devasted and will be home tonight, we are all worried how Baxter will react when he gets home and there's no Roxie.

I have a male boston and a male boxer and a female boxer in the middle. BT's are great and playful. Mine doesn't have a mean bone in his body and loves to play and play. He is great with my boxers and plays with them running and jumping like he is the same size as them. He doesn't care about size just playing. Very smart and sweet and individual personality. Mine is an escape artist and likes to figure things out to torture me. Just do an introduction to see how they react to each other first. I love my BT and will always have one.

I have a 5 month old female Boxer and a 2 year old female Boston. They seem to be getting along great, but I will say the Boston is definitely the dominant of the two!

We have Jesse the boxer who will be 2 in August and Joey the boston who is 6 months old. They are best buddies. Joey is wilder than either of the boxers I have had. Actually, he's nuts, . He thinks he's as big as Jesse. They run together, wrestle together, etc. My concern at first was the size difference. I thought Jesse would hurt Joey. WRONG. Jesse has always been great with him. In his own way, of course, . He doesn't think twice about grabbing one of Joey's rear legs and pulling him across the room. It sounds and looks awful but he does it gently and does not hurt Joey. It used to worry me and I'd always be on "alert". As time has gone on, I've relaxed and realized I was worried about what Jesse would do for nothing. Now, Joey on the other hand, he's the one that needs to be corrected for getting too rough with Jesse, even though he's only a fraction of his size. If Jesse is lying down to sleep or rest, Joey will run at him full speed and land on his back and pull at his ears or steal toys from Jesse. Years ago there was a horror movie with a character named "chuckie"...well, my nickname for Joey is chuckie.

All in all, the best thing we've done for Jesse is to get Joey. They truly are "brothers". We also have an older mini-schnauzer who pretty much hates them both and sticks to herself. She was not the ideal playmate for Jesse.

As long as you have patience and a sense of humor, go for it. A husband with the same qualities also helps, .

We have a Boxer and a Boston. Both are males and they are the best of friends! They are so close, they get a little freaked whenever we seperate them. The Boston has more indoor energy than our Boxer but we have a very laid back Boxer. I will agree with the poster above...our Boston rules the house. The Bostons tend to want to be in charge and the Boxers tend to let them. But they do have similiar personalities and health requirements. (both can't deal with extreme heat or cold) Both are smart, good watchdogs, and good with well behaved kids.
