I'm a full supporter of rescues ...but right now I'm a little "ticked" with the one here in Va. I inquired about a pup they have listed on petfinder last week and still have yet to receive a reply/response of any sort. I guess it's just not meant for me to adopt this guy. I think you guys/gals near the west coast have a lot more turning up in rescues than here in the east....or so it seems.

Wanda, I really wished they had gotten back to you, it generally takes me about a week or so sometimes depending on the number of Life/death issues that crop up. They tend to suck the energy right out of you. :( And most of all, Thanks for trying!

Oh I haven't given up....I know what it takes to be a part of a rescue group. It takes a very special type of person and I thank everyone here who can handle the pressure.....especially the emotional pressure.

The good days are so good that they outweigh the bad days :) It just makes my heart sing to hear my babies are doing well.

Here are a couple of examples:
1. The last foster baby, Buster, I only had him for 4 days. We found the most perfect adoptive home so quickly. He was the sweetest, most well behaved 9mo's old baby you have ever seen. We do something called "test drives" or temporary custody. Gives the people 12-48hrs to see if it is going to work. Anyhow, I called them after the 48hrs. and the lady basically said "You are going to have to pry him out of my cold dead fingers to get him back!" :D They said he was everything they ever wanted in a dog and didnt know. Talk about warm fuzzies!
2. One of the puppies from that litter that came in last oct was being babysat by one of the other rescue members. She was the runt of the litter and my personal favorite. He said she is so very happy and well behaved (much better behaved than her littermate, Drake - my puppy ;) ) He said she even brought his 5yr foster boy (Winston, super laid back) out of his shell and had him acting like a little puppy again.
3. Another puppy from that litter was adopted by a family that had adopted a 10mo's old from us, This puppy though was the pudge bucket of the litter. They said her (Porcha) and the 10mo's old (Boxter) are the best of buddies, and she works very hard at keeping Boxter in line. Also she has become daddies little girl and just loves him. Daddy was not a big boxer fan to begin with, but is now so in love with little Porcha, they now want to work for our rescue.......they want other people to share such love and joy as they have.

Things like those above are what help us keep going!
Also, if anyone adopted a boxer from a rescue, I want to challenge you to take a moment and send them a note about how wonderful it is with your adopted baby. We NEED this!! You will be making a whole slew of people very very happy! :D

You're right ladyluck_t, the good times outweigh the bad in rescue or I wouldn't still be doing this. I've seen so many heartbreaking things that sometimes I just feel that I cannot possibly do this anymore, and then along comes a dog, a new volunteer or an adopter, that just makes it all worth while.

We have to take the good with the bad. Rescuing boxers is a joy and a privilege to me. Yes, it's depressing as hell some days, but the rewards are immeasurable.

A couple of weeks ago we pulled a "family of four" from a local shelter. Mom, dad and two pups. The idiot that surrendered them gave away 4 of the pups in the shelter parking lot, at about two weeks of age. I am sure they are all 4 dead by now. :( We lost the male pup this morning to what we think was pneumonia. Keep Teagan, the female in your thoughts please. She is doing well, but we thought Simon was too. :(

Yesterday we pulled a young female, we're guessing a year or less, and she is as big as a house pregnant. HUGE I tell ya. She is at our vet waiting for the pups to come. We're hoping for boxers, but by the size of that belly, bears would not surprise me.

We lost another one of our babies to a tragic accident a few weeks ago as well, so as you can see it's a roller coaster ride. It never stops. But for those brave enough to take the ups and downs, the end rewards are magic.

So please, if you have a rescue in your area, do whatever you can to help. Even if it's just visiting a pregnant momma at the vet while she waits to deliver pups. She'll appreciate it and your heart will sing. Or maybe you could help transport one on death row to a safe place where he/she will be loved and safe.

Rescue Rocks!

Just wanted to say, there is a never ending supply of really good boxers out there, If anyone is interested in adopting, fostering, or just getting to know people who love the breed as much as you do.

I know with our rescue, we actually have more applications for dogs than dogs. But we dont have enough people to do the home visits and reference checks. We could process this stuff faster if we did have help in this area. So please if all you have is a couple of hours once or twice a week in the evening. It would be a great time to make phone calls and do phone interviews. If you are a stay at home mom, perhaps you could squeeze in 1-2 hrs a week checking up on references. Or perhaps you are a full time student in college.....You schedule is quite varied and you may be able to check references or return calls. And every little bit helps us out!

I just signed up this morning to start volunteering. I have spoken with my local boxer rescue and although my husband and I have decided that we would love to foster, I am choosing to start by volunteering.
I also need to say that each person on this forum involved in a rescue is an angel. It breaks my heart to hear about boxers (or any dogs) being discarded as if a broken toy. I want to make a difference and I hope every person who loves this breed as much as I do will take some time and evaluate how they can help. If you do not have the time, send some money- ask if you can drop off food, medicines, equipment - whatever. Anything helps! Thanks for inspiring people!
