Boxer play - is he aggressive?

I have a 18month Male Boxer (he was neutered at 15 months) and when he plays with new dogs he seems to be very dominant. I have read a few posts about this and it seems to be normal, however i am worried that it is more dominant or aggressive as he becomes more rough with the other dog when either I or my husband go outside with the dogs.
We also have a little maltese x shitsu and he does not play like that with him - it is only with medium size dogs that he meets.

He never bites but makes lots of growling noises and pins the other dog down and wont let him get up. I am not sure if he does the same to females as all our friends have male dogs.

Is this normal boxer behaviour and do i have to just learn to live with it? As I feel bad for the other owners as they think Vargas (my boxer) is being too rough. Even with my friends male boxer he never lets him pin him down - he is always on top! Though my friends boxer does always go back to him to play!

Can anyone let me know if this is normal and if not what i should do to try to train him not too? Thanks!

A great big boxer hello from Roxi, Harley and me! Welcome to the best boxer resource around!
One thing to keep in mind is that other breeds don't play the same way unless taught to by a boxer buddy. Some dogs who have not been exposed to boxers may find their brand of play a little intimidating.

A big hello and welcome to Boxerworld from me and Minx! I actually had to stop taking Blaze to the dog park because of this reason. Good luck with what you find out!

I have a fifty pound Boxer pup who is almost 9 months and a hundred pound german shepard, and the video is exactly what they look like with my boxer usually besting the bigger shepard. So unless the people really are bothered it kind of sounds like play to me.

thanks for all welcomes!

I looked at the video that Teegra posted (thanks for that) and can say that is exactly the noises my big boy Vargas makes, however he does seem to play slightly rougher than that - though I suppose he is young compared to those two?
It is more the pinning down of the other dogs and not letting them up I am concerned with! I think I will have to test him out with a boxer bigger than him and see what happens...

I am taking him to visit the breeders that we bought him from soon and I am sure they will be able to tell me if it is okay - and if not what we should do to tell him it is not!

This is such a great website and forum- I wish I had known about it earlier!

Thanks again!
